About The Organisation
Our client is a large and complex government organisation focused on leveraging data, analytics, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies to support operational excellence and strategic decision-making. The organisation is investing heavily in advanced analytics capabilities, machine learning, and up-to-date data platforms to maximise the value of data while maintaining strong governance, security, privacy, and ethical standards.
About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Scientist to join a high-performing data and analytics team. This is a senior technical specialist position responsible for leading complex, high-impact data science, machine learning, and AI initiatives across the organisation. The successful candidate will have deep expertise in advanced statistics, machine learning, Large Language Models (LLMs), and Artificial Intelligence, with the ability to translate complex business challenges into production-ready analytical solutions.
You will take ownership of the full data science lifecycle from problem definition and experimental design through to model development, deployment, monitoring, validation, and stakeholder engagement. This role will also act as a trusted advisor and mentor, driving best practice across advanced analytics, machine learning, AI governance, and data science delivery.
Key Accountabilities And Outcomes
- Lead the design, development, and delivery of Large Language Model (LLM) and AI-based solutions.
- Ensure AI solutions adhere to governance, privacy, ethical, security, and human-in-the-loop requirements.
- Lead the development of advanced statistical, machine learning, and predictive analytics solutions.
- Apply regression, classification, forecasting, time-series analysis, Bayesian methods, causal inference, and hypothesis testing techniques.
- Design and implement machine learning frameworks using supervised and unsupervised learning methodologies.
- Develop deep learning solutions including Convolutional Neural Networks, Recurrent Neural Networks, and transformer-based architectures.
- Own the end-to-end data science lifecycle including data ingestion, preparation, modelling, validation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
- Develop robust experimental designs and validation frameworks considering statistical significance, confidence intervals, power analysis, assumptions, and bias.
- Work with large, complex relational and graph-based datasets to generate actionable insights.
- Ensure analytical approaches are explainable, reproducible, statistically valid, and aligned with business objectives.
- Translate business requirements into advanced analytical and AI-driven solutions.
- Develop clear analytical methodologies, assumptions, and decision frameworks.
- Conduct rigorous model testing, validation, optimisation, and performance monitoring.
- Deliver data-driven recommendations that support operational, tactical, and strategic decision-making.
- Develop scalable analytics and machine learning solutions using Python and SQL.
- Collaborate closely with Data Engineering, Architecture, Platform, and Business teams to support production deployment and operationalisation of models.
- Maintain high-quality codebases using version control, testing, documentation, and MLOps best practices.
- Present analytical findings through reports, dashboards, visualisations, presentations, and executive briefings.
- Provide mentorship and technical leadership to analysts and junior data scientists.
- Act as a trusted advisor to business stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into practical business outcomes.
Desired Experience And Capabilities
- 8–10 years of industry experience delivering advanced analytics, data science, machine learning, statistical modelling, and AI solutions within complex environments.
- Proven experience leading end-to-end data science projects from problem definition through to deployment and operationalisation.
- Expert-level knowledge of advanced statistics, modelling, inference techniques, and experimental design.
- Robust experience with machine learning including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, ensemble models, feature engineering, optimisation, and evaluation frameworks.
- Practical experience with modern AI and deep learning technologies including NLP, computer vision, LLMs, and transformer-based models.
- Expert-level Python programming skills, including experience with NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, and/or PyTorch.
- Advanced SQL skills with experience working across large, complex datasets.
- Strong understanding of MLOps, model monitoring, validation, testing, and continuous improvement practices.
- Experience working with sensitive and secure data environments.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analytical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Experience implementing governance, ethical AI, privacy, and security controls in analytical solutions.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and business partnering skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Master's degree, PhD, or significant research experience in applied analytics, machine learning, or artificial intelligence.
- Industry certifications or specialised training in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or Cloud Technologies.
- Experience working within highly regulated or security-conscious environments.
