Job Description

About the Role

The Friends’ School is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Assistant Sailing Coach to join our co-curricular sailing program, Friends’ Sailing.



We are looking for a motivated and experienced sailing coach who can provide technical instruction, supervise students, and support a positive, safe, and inclusive sporting environment.

The successful applicant will be passionate about developing students’ sailing skills, from beginner to advanced levels, and committed to fostering a culture of teamwork, safety, and enjoyment across all Friends’ Sailing activities.

Key Responsibilities

- Organise, set up, and deliver sailing training sessions under the guidance of the Head of Sailing.
- Provide technical instruction in team sailing and match racing, supporting senior students in coaching less experienced sailors.
- Attend sailing regattas and provide on- and off-water support for students.
- Supervise students during rigging, de-rigging, and sailing, ensuring compliance with risk assessments and WHS protocols.
- Document completion of training programs and activities.
- Report any child safeguarding concerns in accordance with mandatory reporting requirements and promote a child-safe workplace.
- Contribute to maintaining the culture and values of Friends’ Sailing in all activities.
- Advise the Head of Sailing on crew selection and refer any student or parent issues as required.
- Current Sailing Coaching Certificate and Motor Boat Licence.
- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Understanding of the 10 National Child Safe Standards.
- Ability to supervise and instruct students safely in a school environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, and parents.
- Organised, flexible, and able to prioritise tasks effectively.
- Alignment with the Purpose & Concerns and ethos of The Friends’ School.
- Current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People registration (employment category) and a National Police Check (less than 6 months old).
