Reporting to the Lead Database Administrator, the Senior Database Administrator is responsible for the design, administration, optimisation, security, availability and continuous improvement of the Court's enterprise Microsoft SQL Server database setting.
The role provides senior technical leadership for SQL Server platforms supporting critical Court business applications while also providing secondary support for Oracle database environments. The position works closely with application teams, infrastructure engineers, cyber security specialists, vendors and business stakeholders to ensure highly available, secure and resilient database services.
The successful applicant will be a hands‑on Database Administrator with primary responsibility for SQL Server and secondary responsibility for Oracle databases and will possess extensive experience supporting enterprise production environments and contribute to database architecture, automation, disaster recovery, performance tuning, and continuous service improvement initiatives.
Major Responsibilities
SQL Server (Primary)
- Administer Microsoft SQL Server 2016/2019/2022 and later versions in production environments.
- Perform database installation, configuration, upgrades and patching.
- Perform database performance tuning using: Execution Plans, Extended Events, Query Store, Dynamic Management Views (DMVs).
- Optimise indexes, statistics and database configuration.
- Configure and monitor SQL Server Agent jobs.
- Redgate SQL Monitor.
- Perform disaster recovery testing.
- Monitor SQL Server security including Logins, Roles, Encryption, Auditing.
- Support ETL and reporting platforms.
- Troubleshoot blocking, deadlocks and performance bottlenecks.
- Develop automation using PowerShell and T‑SQL.
- Manage SSRS and Power BI reports.
- Backup and recovery (SQL native and Commvault).
Oracle (Secondary)
- Provide operational support for Oracle Database environments.
- Monitor, tune Oracle performance and health checks.
- Support Oracle patching and upgrades.
- Assist with RMAN/Commvault backup and recovery.
- Assist with Oracle troubleshooting and incident resolution.
- Support Oracle Application forms/report.
Selection Criteria
1. Essential Technical Skills
Extensive hands‑on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 in enterprise production environments, including SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and Power BI, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), T‑SQL, Query Store, SQL Server Agent, clustering technologies, backup and recovery (SQL native and Commvault), disaster recovery, PowerShell scripting, Redgate SQL Monitor,
Windows Server and Active Directory integration.
2. Technical Problem Solving
Demonstrated experience diagnosing, analysing and resolving complex Microsoft SQL Server production issues relating to database performance, blocking, deadlocks, high resource utilisation, backup and recovery, high availability, disaster recovery and root cause analysis within large enterprise environments.
3. SQL Server Administration
Demonstrated hands‑on experience administering enterprise Microsoft SQL Server database environments, including installation, configuration, upgrades, migrations, performance tuning, SQL Server Agent, Always On Availability Groups or clustering technologies, backup and recovery, security administration, patch management, capacity planning and automation using T‑SQL and PowerShell.
4. Operational Improvement
Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement by implementing automation, improving database performance, enhancing monitoring and alerting, reducing operational risk, increasing system availability and introducing best practice database administration processes.
5. Documentation and Governance
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain high‑quality technical documentation, including operational procedures, database standards, disaster recovery documentation, architecture diagrams and implementation guides. Experience working within ITIL‑aligned Incident, Problem and Change Management processes is highly desirable.
6. Project Delivery
Demonstrated experience delivering enterprise database projects involving database upgrades, migrations, infrastructure refresh, cloud adoption, application deployments and platform modernisation while effectively managing competing priorities and meeting project deadlines.
Desirable Technical Skills (Oracle DBA)
Hands‑on experience administering Oracle Database 11g, 19c or later on Oracle Linux or UNIX platforms, including Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), Oracle Data Guard, RMAN/Commvault backup and recovery, Oracle performance tuning, OPatch, Oracle Data Pump, SQL and PL/SQL, Oracle Forms 11g/12c together with experience supporting enterprise Oracle production and non‑production environments.
Desirable Experience and Certifications
- Minimum 5+ years' experience in database administration within enterprise environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Microsoft Certified: SQL Server Database Administration.
- Oracle Certified Professional (OCP).
Employment with the Court is subject to the conditions prescribed in the Public Service Act 1999, and the following:
- Australian citizenship – the successful applicant must hold Australian citizenship.
- Security and character clearance – the successful applicant must satisfy a Police Records Check and may also be required to complete security clearances during the course of their employment.
- Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
