About the role

North West Transmission Development (NWTD) Project

TasNetworks is delivering one of Tasmania’s most significant infrastructure programs — the North West Transmission Development. We’re looking for a Specialist Project Engineer – Substations (Primary) to help shape the future of the state’s transmission network and ensure our substations are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest engineering standards.

And the role itself

As a Specialist Project Engineer – Substations (Primary), you’ll lead and coordinate the NWTD substation scope of work, ensuring engineering requirements are fully embedded across design, construction, commissioning and handover. You’ll provide technical oversight, field support and specialist engineering input to enable high‑quality project outcomes across schedule, cost and quality.

You’ll work closely with the NWTD team, TasNetworks BAU groups and the Principal Contractor to ensure seamless integration of primary and secondary systems, clear interface management and consistent delivery of engineering outputs. You’ll also play a key role in approvals, testing, commissioning, and ensuring all deliverables meet the standards set out in the Quality Management Plan.

What you’ll do

- Lead the planning, development and delivery of substation primary engineering deliverables across the full project lifecycle — design, construction, commissioning and close‑out.
- Manage engineering risks in line with TasNetworks’ risk management framework, ensuring compliance with standards, regulations and policies.
- Set and manage interface boundaries across primary systems to ensure complete scope development and successful integration.
- Collaborate with NWTD project streams, BAU teams and the Principal Contractor to ensure clarity of asset interfaces and project hold points.
- Engage and manage external consultants and contractors for specialised substation tasks.
- Review and approve commissioning documentation, including ITPs, ITRs and Commissioning Test Plans.
- Provide construction and commissioning guidance using your transmission substation experience to ensure quality execution.
- Manage construction‑phase engineering deliverables such as non‑conformances, network constraints and design modifications.
- Attend and certify factory and site acceptance testing for primary assets.
- Mentor and support graduate and junior engineers within the substation engineering stream.
- Champion safety, proactively identifying risks and continuously improving safety performance.

About you

You’re an experienced transmission project engineer with deep capability in substation design, construction and commissioning. You bring strong technical judgement, excellent stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to lead through influence in a complex, multi‑disciplinary environment.

You’ll also bring:

- Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering (Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent recognised by Engineers Australia).
- Extensive experience in transmission project delivery (greenfield and brownfield), including substation design and construction.
- Strong understanding of primary substation systems.
- Experience with project management systems — cost and schedule tracking, change control and risk management.
- Demonstrated capability in project scoping, specification development, design reviews, onsite quality inspection, safety in design/HAZOP and commissioning.
- Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining exceptional safety performance.
- Solid communication, negotiation and relationship‑building skills.
- Collaborative leadership aligned to TasNetworks’ core behaviours.
