City of Merri-bek

We’re looking for a Junior Designer who is excited to build a strong foundation in design while contributing to meaningful, creative projects from day one.

This role isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being curious, open to feedback and motivated to continually improve. You’ll work alongside experienced designers, strategists and creatives in a vibrant, collaborative studio culture that champions creativity, supports your development and gives you opportunities to take ownership as your confidence grows.

If you enjoy solving problems, exploring ideas, sweating the details and creating work you’re proud of, we’d love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

- Supporting the design team across brand, print, digital and campaign projects.
- Producing final artwork and design files to a high standard.
- Assisting with brand collateral, presentations, reports and social content.
- Applying existing brand systems with care while helping evolve them where appropriate.
- Collaborating with other designers and strategists to create exceptional work.
- Collaborating with the Client Services team to ensure deliverables meet project requirements.
- Continuously refining your work through feedback and iteration.

What we’re looking for?

More than anything, we’re looking for someone with a genuine passion for design and a desire to keep learning.

You’ll ideally have:

- A qualification in Graphic Design, Communication Design or a related discipline.
- A portfolio demonstrating solid typography, layout and visual communication fundamentals.
- A thoughtful approach to problem solving and an eye for detail.

- Confidence using Adobe Creative Cloud and Figma.
- Good communication skills and a cooperative mindset.
- The ability to receive feedback positively and apply it thoughtfully.
- Robust organisation and file management habits
- A willingness to ask questions, seek understanding and take initiative.
- Experience with motion design, illustration, photography or digital design is a bonus, but not essential.

Our ideal person:

- Minimum 1 year studio/agency experience
- Confidence in using the Adobe suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) and a working knowledge of Figma.
- A solid knowledge of graphic design fundamentals, including typesetting, layout design, information design and colour theory.
- A drive to learn from the team around you to upskill and hone your design knowledge and skills.
- An eye for the smaller details. Checking final artwork for basic errors like grammar, spelling and formatting errors.
- The ability to iterate and self-critic.
- Can work to meet tight deadlines without compromising on quality.

Growth Opportunities

- Build your technical and creative skills under the guidance of experienced designers.
- Gain experience working closely with Strategy and UX teams on integrated projects.

- Learn from mentorship provided by the Creative Director and senior designers.
- Help to develop a meaningful portfolio of social impact work.

To be considered for this role:

Share a portfolio of your best design work, and be prepared to discuss your role on the projects. We want to get to know how you think about graphic design, to give us a sense of who you are, not just what you’ve done.
