Position Information

Broken Hill North Public School (BHNPS) is located in the Far West of NSW and is one of six local primary schools in Broken Hill.

The school community is committed to providing students with a broad and inclusive education that explicitly teaches essential skills and knowledge with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, ensuring equitable access for all learners. The school offers a diverse range of educational opportunities designed to differentiate for each student in reaching their full potential, with a particular focus on fostering High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE). Our approach upholds high expectations for both staff and students, promoting a culture of excellence, respect, and continuous growth.

Each student is encouraged to take pride in their own culture while appreciating the culture of others.

Broken Hill North Public School is classified as P2 with a current enrolment of 200 students. The structure of the school comprises 6 support classes, 8 mainstream classes, and 33% Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander enrolment.

Staff at the school are a mixture of experienced and newly appointed teachers. The staff have a robust focus on collaboration supported by high impact professional learning. The school is supported by an Aboriginal Education Officer, Aboriginal School Learning Support Officer (SLSO) and mainstream SLSO’s.

The strategic directions for Broken Hill North Public School include Student Growth and Attainment, Effective Classroom Practice and Positive School Culture.

The school has a strong student wellbeing culture. BHNPS has a health hub utilised by a range of outside agencies. The school also operates a breakfast club.





The school is supported through their ongoing positive engagement with the BHNPS P&C; and the Broken Hill Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and places great value on the engagement with community.

Specific Selection Criteria

- Demonstrated evidence of strong, visible leadership that unites the whole school community around a clear vision and effectively drives a bold, comprehensive explicit teaching-based school excellence plan.
- Established expertise in delivering evidence-based explicit teaching professional learning and differentiated curriculum for diverse learners, coupled with a strong ability to enhance and sustain a whole-school wellbeing culture.
- Strong demonstrated effective leadership in cultivating a professional learning culture that drives ongoing staff development in explicit teaching, builds motivated, high-performing teams, and elevates teaching and student outcomes.
- Proven evidence of expertise to forge authentic partnerships that results in improvements in practice with students, parents, staff, and communities—including the AECG—to drive collaboration and advance learning, wellbeing, and Closing the Gap outcomes in K–6 settings.

General Selection Criteria

1. High level educational leadership with the skills to lead and manage a complex public school focused on the delivery of high quality education.
2. Ability to lead and manage rigorous and inclusive whole school teaching and learning programs.
3.



High level communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build positive relationships and engage all levels of the school and educational community.
4. Ability to lead and manage the development and performance of staff to improve teaching and learning.
5. Ability to plan systems and manage resources effectively and equitably to enhance teaching and learning.
6. Capacity to lead staff in implementing the Department's Aboriginal education policy and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

Special Notes

Classification Structure for Principals: The Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2020 details the new principal classification structure based on complexity of schools which commenced in 2016. The principal classification for this school is Principal Level P2 for 2026.
