Systems / Controls Engineer

This is an opportunity to work on safety-critical technology that keeps transport networks operating safely and reliably across Australia and internationally.
Based in North Sydney, you'll join a highly skilled engineering team responsible for the design, development, integration and commissioning of advanced train communication and control systems. Working across the full Systems Engineering lifecycle, you'll help deliver innovative embedded solutions for some of the world's most demanding rail environments.
The Role
As a Systems / Controls Engineer, you'll play a key role in the design and delivery of embedded control systems, working across requirements analysis, software development, systems integration, testing and commissioning. You'll collaborate with both Australian and international engineering teams while working on technically challenging projects involving embedded software, PLCs, industrial networking and safety-critical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop system, functional and customer requirements using Systems Engineering methodologies.
- Produce design specifications, interface documentation, verification plans and technical reports.
- Design, develop and commission PLC-based control systems using IEC 61131-3.
- Develop embedded software in C on Linux and real-time platforms.
- Integrate embedded systems with industrial communication networks including TCP/IP, UDP, CAN Bus, Modbus and Train Management System (TMS) protocols.
- Support software integration, validation, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and commissioning.
- Troubleshoot complex hardware, software and communications issues.
- Support project delivery, customer workshops, technical proposals and engineering documentation.
About You
You'll be an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and wants to work on products that have a real impact on critical infrastructure.
You'll ideally have
- Degree qualifications in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Systems or Software Engineering.
- Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency.
- Experience across the full software development lifecycle.
- Strong Systems Engineering fundamentals.
- PLC programming experience (IEC 61131-3).
- Strong C programming experience.
- Experience developing software on embedded Linux and/or real-time operating systems.
- Knowledge of industrial networking and communication protocols.
- Robust troubleshooting, documentation and communication skills.
Highly Regarded
Experience in any of the following will be highly regarded:
- Rail, rolling stock or signalling
- Safety-critical systems
- Embedded Linux or RTOS
- Functional Safety (IEC 61508 / EN50126 / EN50128 / EN50129)
- Git, Python or Bash
- Electronics hardware integration
- Industrial automation or control systems
