About the Role
This is a full‑time, permanent Staff Specialist position in General Surgery at Armidale Rural Referral Hospital, a modern regional referral facility in New South Wales with a comprehensive surgical service and a supportive team of Registrars, a Resident Medical Officer, and allied staff.
Professional Opportunities
You will be part of a dedicated surgical team, advising on a broad case mix within a 99‑bed community hospital that serves over 55,000 people. The role offers opportunities in clinical governance, teaching, research, and outreach to surrounding district hospitals.
Teaching and Education
Collaboration with the University of Newcastle and University of New England Joint Medical Program through the Tablelands Clinical School provides a teaching environment that includes student placements, simulation labs, and modern educational facilities.
- Teach and mentor medical students and junior doctors
- Supervise registrars and support training programs
- Contribute to research and quality improvement initiatives
- Shape the next generation of rural surgeons
About You
- A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (General Surgery) or eligibility through an appropriate specialist pathway
- Demonstrated expertise in General Surgery and clinical leadership
- Commitment to clinical excellence, education,
and professional development
- Robust communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills
Mandatory Core Requirements
- Admitting, consultative, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient, telehealth and on‑call services as required by HNELHD
- Attendance and availability during rostered hours and on‑call, including clinical handover, supervision, teaching, and emergency care
- Provision of education and research activities as required by HNELHD
- Evidence of medical expertise in General Surgery through recent comprehensive experience
- Evidence of scholarly activity and ongoing professional development
- Evidence of effective communication across patients, students, health professionals, and the community
- Evidence of collaborative, interdisciplinary teamwork
- Evidence of management and leadership capability in a dynamic health system
- Evidence of commitment to professional standards, peer review, and clinical governance
- Evidence of advocacy for individual and societal health improvement
