Mount Isa Mines is looking for an Electrical Engineer with a position within the Engineering Projects team working across the Copper & Lead Smelters. This role is residentially based in Mount Isa, working a 5/2 4/3 roster. We encourage suitably qualified and experienced local candidates to apply. For those candidates located outside of Mount Isa, relocation support is available for this position to enable you and your family to live and work in Mount Isa.

About The Role
As an Electrical Engineer , you will be responsible for the safe and successful delivery of complex electrical asset improvement projects within the Smelter Projects portfolio. Reporting to the Superintendent – Smelter Projects , you will manage electrical projects across scoping, design, procurement, construction, and closeout, ensuring alignment with business targets, budgets, and asset availability requirements.
This role operates across both daily operational support and capital project delivery, requiring strong planning, coordination, and technical capability. You will work closely with operations, maintenance,
asset management, and safety teams while contributing to a high‑performing engineering environment and mentoring junior and graduate engineers.
Key responsibilities
- Scope, design, manage, and deliver electrical projects safely, on time, and within budget, in accordance with site and Australian standards.
- Lead tendering, procurement, and management of electrical contractors and sub‑contractors.
- Provide accurate project reporting, financial tracking, and forecasting to support decision‑making.
- Undertake forward planning and develop pre‑emptive strategies to minimise downtime and maximise plant availability.
- Provide technical electrical support to Queensland Metals departments, including operations and maintenance teams.
- Complete and report on planned and ad‑hoc safety inspections, audits, and quality field leadership activities.
- Ensure completion of project closeout documentation within required timeframes.
- Maintain regular project reporting and planning meetings with the Superintendent.
- Mentor and support graduate and junior electrical engineers.
About You – Skills And Experience
You are a technically capable Electrical Engineer with experience delivering complex, multi‑disciplinary projects in an industrial or processing environment. You are safety‑focused, organised, and comfortable managing competing priorities while maintaining strong attention to detail. You work effectively both independently and as part of a broader engineering and operations team, and you communicate clearly with stakeholders at all levels. You bring a practical, solutions‑focused approach and a strong commitment to quality, compliance, and continuous improvement.
You will bring
- Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering.
- Experience in electrical and instrumentation design within industrial or minerals processing environments.
- Experience managing complex engineering projects, including contractor and construction management.
- Knowledge of Australian Standards, contract delivery requirements, WHS, and risk management systems.
- Experience with process control systems, including Yokogawa DCS and Allen Bradley PLCs.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, PowerCAD, and PTW for electrical design and analysis.
- Working knowledge of SAP financial and work management systems and intermediate Microsoft Office capability.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations, design reviews, and risk assessments.
- Robust communication, planning, and time management skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety leadership and procedural compliance.
