Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District is seeking a Senior Resident Medical Officer for the Drug and Alcohol Service, which aims to provide the best care in the management of addiction and other drug and alcohol problems to individuals, families and community organisations in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District.

Responsibilities

- Coordinating and documenting the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted to the drug and alcohol inpatient ward, within the public health organisation.
- The day-to-day assessment and management of the patients in his/her Unit, communicating with them and their family the nature of their condition and its treatment.
- Communicating and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate, then arranging discharge and liaising with local medical officers and other community based care modalities, including but not limited to, the various non-govt rehabilitation facilities.
- All decisions concerning the patient(s) in consultation with their immediate supervisor and team.
- Participation in the afterhours and weekend rosters.

Location / Setting

The Drug and Alcohol Service provides assessment, referral and treatment services for both hospital patients and others in the community whose use of alcohol, tobacco and/or other drugs constitutes a health risk.



It also improves skills of hospital and community health staff for the identification and optimal intervention and management of these clients. A medical/nursing resource team provides consultancy service to other health care providers and hospitals within the area for patient treatment. The Service promotes and evaluates services and research relevant to its activities.

Qualifications

- MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
- Completion of a minimum of 2 years postgraduate experience including clinical practice in Addiction Medicine or an acute medical setting.
- Registration (or eligibility to register) as an opioid substitution therapy prescriber.
- The incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements and the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
- Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
- Verification of vaccination per NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy.

- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.




- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
- Demonstrated experience in Addiction Medicine, Psychiatry or General Medicine in a setting relevant to the key accountabilities of this role.
- Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
- Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a versatile approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
