The role

The ABC is looking for a Commissioning Editor to play a lead role in 7.30’s editorial strategy and content delivery through both short and long term planning.

The Job

- Lead and support staff to maintain high standards in current affairs programming and a collaborative team culture.
- Identify strong original and investigative stories for 7.30, from commissioning through to delivery.
- Assign stories to reporters, producers and SPs, and coordinate with the story team throughout production.
- Work with ABC teams outside 7.30 to commission stories for the program.
- Respond quickly to breaking news and help drive coverage of major events.
- Work with the EP, Melbourne Bureau Chief and SPs to ensure content quality, consistency, and compliance with editorial and legal standards and to decide the day’s running order.
- Oversee team output using a structured planning system, in consultation with the EP.
- Play an active role in daily and weekly editorial meetings to develop broadcast and digital content.
- Keep the EP updated on news developments and coordinate with newsroom, local radio and other ABC teams for promotion and follow‑up coverage.

About You

You’ll have:

- Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent skills, knowledge,



and experience.
- Strong editorial leadership and the ability to guide high‑performing teams in a fast‑paced newsroom.
- Excellent teamwork, communication, interpersonal, and time‑management skills.
- Robust organisational, problem‑solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Passion for creating authentic content that reflects Australia’s diverse communities, including culturally and linguistically diverse and Indigenous communities where relevant.
- Ongoing interest in finding and telling stories that reflect Australia’s diversity.
- Ability to build and maintain contacts across the broader Australian community.
