Located at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH), the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology provides a consultative service and is supported by a level 4 maternity, a level 4 neonatal unit, and an 8‑bed intensive care unit. The maternity unit houses the birthing suite and all inpatient maternity patients for the region, with antenatal care delivered at NWRH, Mersey Community Hospital (MCH), and outreach clinics. Approximately 1,000 births occur annually. Staffing includes experienced midwives with the highly sought-after MGP scheme.

The outreach services (antenatal and gynaecology clinics) are located at regional centres such as West Coast District Hospital, Smithton District Hospital, and King Island District Hospital and Health Centre.

Role Overview

This position is aimed at highly skilled and motivated medical professionals who see challenges as opportunities and are passionate about improving healthcare in a modern health system. You will play a key role in developing patient‑ and system‑level care and lead the delivery of the undergraduate general medical education programme, in partnership with the University of Tasmania through the Rural Clinical School. The successful applicant will participate in the after‑hours on‑call roster at NWRH, typically 1 in 5 weekdays and weekends.

Appointment Details

Permanent, full‑time day‑worker position (with on‑call), working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible. Hours are negotiable with the successful applicant. For a period of twelve months from publication, this process may be used to fill similar vacancies.

Salary and Benefits

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3: $222,789 – $319,701 per annum, pro rata, plus 12 % superannuation and access to salary packaging.

Salary may range from $465,112 to $647,306 per annum, pro rata, including allowances and superannuation.

- Salary packaging options include living expenses up to $9,010 and meals/entertainment allowances of $2,650 per year.
- Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle or a motor vehicle allowance of $28,786 per annum, pro rata.
- Participation in the Private Practice Scheme at 35 % or an allowance in lieu of the scheme.

Eligibility

- Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.
- Current Working with Children Registration.
