The Role

Defence Security’s Threat and Assurance Branch is seeking talented and motivated individuals to join a high-performing team, protecting Defence’s people, information, assets, and capabilities. You will collate and analyse information from diverse sources using your critical thinking and intelligence tradecraft skills to deliver high quality assessments.

Under limited direction, you will undertake work that is complex, challenging and sensitive in the fields of intelligence, case management, policy, and support to other government agencies. Tasks may include developing intelligence products, preparing briefs, and developing governance frameworks that underpin Defence’s counterintelligence posture. You will liaise with stakeholders across the Defence enterprise, the National Intelligence Community and international partners.

This role is Canberra-based and some interstate travel may be required. A Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV 1) security clearance is required to commence this role; however, candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Positive Vetting (PV) security clearance.

About our Team

The Directorate of Security and Counterintelligence (SCI) and the Directorate of Enterprise Security Assessment (DESA) provide critical analysis and policy support to senior Defence decision-makers. Both directorates undertake a range of specialist enterprise-wide security functions to protect Defence people, assets, information and capabilities from security threats.

SCI is responsible for detecting and mitigating insider threats and counterintelligence issues and providing timely security intelligence and threat advice to the Defence enterprise.



The Directorate comprises of both Australian Defence Force and APS staff and undertakes close liaison with other government agencies on investigations, services requests for information from across the National Intelligence Community, and supports the Australian Government Contact Reporting Scheme.

DESA supports strategic security assessments within the Defence enterprise by utilising intelligence driven methodology to provide tailored security threat and vulnerability advice to risk stewards and senior decision-makers. In addition to providing advice to select National Defence Strategy and AUKUS Pillar One priorities, the team supports a variety of Defence and National Security programs including the Treasury-led Foreign Investment Review Board, the Safeguarding Australia’s Military Secrets (SAMS) legislation, and supports the Defence Industry Security Program by conducting Foreign Ownership, Control and Influence assessments.

Eligibility

Security Clearance

Prior to commencement, successful applicants will be required to undergo a psychological assessment and an extensive security clearance process. As a Positive Vetting clearance is required, applicants must be Australian Citizens; be able to account for their personal background for their whole life; and be able to demonstrate suitability to work in a high security intelligence environment.
