About the employer A busy Darwin-based food service and takeaway business (ABN 79 247 268 598) is seeking a reliable, skilled and experienced Cook to support daily kitchen operations in a fast-paced pizza, takeaway and casual dining environment. The successful applicant will be responsible for preparing, seasoning and cooking food, maintaining food quality standards, assisting with menu preparation, portioning meals, storing food safely and supporting efficient kitchen operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Examining foodstuffs to ensure quality, freshness and suitability before preparation and cooking.
- Regulating temperatures of ovens, grills, fryers and other cooking equipment used in food preparation.
- Preparing and cooking food items in accordance with workplace recipes, menu standards and customer orders.
- Seasoning food during cooking to maintain flavour, consistency and quality.
- Portioning food, placing it on plates, trays or takeaway packaging, and adding sauces, garnishes or accompaniments as required.
- Storing food in temperature-controlled facilities in accordance with food safety and hygiene requirements.
- Preparing food to meet special dietary requirements where required and within workplace procedures.
- Assisting with menu preparation, food preparation planning and estimating food requirements where required.
- Preparing pizza bases, toppings, sauces, cooked fillings, side dishes and other menu items according to workplace standards.
- Monitoring cooking times, product quality and presentation during service.
- Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in food preparation and cooking areas.
- Following food safety, stock rotation, allergen management and workplace health and safety procedures.
- Assisting with receiving, checking and storing food supplies.
- Supporting kitchen coordination during busy service periods.
- Assisting with training or guiding junior kitchen staff, kitchen hands or new employees in basic kitchen procedures where required
Selection Criteria 1. Previous experience as a Cook or in a similar commercial kitchen cooking role. 2. Ability to prepare, season and cook food in a fast-paced food service environment.
3. Experience using commercial kitchen equipment, including ovens, grills, fryers and food preparation equipment. 4. Good knowledge of food safety, hygiene, allergen awareness and safe food storage procedures. 5. Ability to follow recipes, portion standards and workplace food preparation procedures.
6. Ability to check food quality, freshness and presentation before service. 7. Good time management and ability to work under pressure during busy service periods. 8.
Ability to work rostered shifts, including evenings, weekends and public holidays if required.
9. Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a kitchen team. 10. Previous experience in a pizza, takeaway, café, restaurant or casual dining environment will be highly regarded. Requirements:
- At least 2 years of relevant commercial cooking experience is preferred.
- AQF Certificate III in Commercial Cookery or equivalent relevant qualification is desirable.
- Relevant experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications where appropriate.
- Food safety training or willingness to complete workplace food safety induction is required.
