Key Responsibilities
Key Duties and Responsibilities of a Chef
- Assist the Head Chef with the day-to-day management of the kitchen.
- Supervise and lead kitchen staff during service.
- Prepare, cook, and present high-quality dishes in accordance with recipes and presentation standards.
- Ensure all food is prepared and served consistently and on time.
- Delegate tasks and monitor staff performance.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and food safety.
- Ensure compliance with HACCP and all relevant food safety regulations.
- Monitor food quality, portion control, and minimise waste.
- Assist with menu planning, recipe development, and seasonal menu changes.
- Manage stock levels, conduct stocktakes, and assist with ordering supplies.
- Step into the Head Chef’s role during leave or absence.
- Handle customer dietary requirements and special requests.
- Ensure all opening and closing kitchen procedures are completed.
- Promote a positive, skilled, and team-oriented workplace culture.
Skill & Experience
REQUIRED SKILLS
Qualifications
- Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (essential).
- Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery (highly desirable).
- Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (required or willing to obtain).
- Current knowledge of Australian Food Standards Code and food safety legislation.
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a commercial kitchen.
- At least 1–2 years’ experience in a senior role such as Chef de Partie or Junior Sous Chef.
