The award-winning Daily Mercury is looking for a confident and experienced journalist to join the team who can help readers understand the complex issues that matter.
The role requires a writer with demonstrated ability who isn't afraid to ask tough questions and tackle some of the region's most important issues like mining, industry and politics.
The best candidate will be skilled in news gathering, able to build rapport with key contacts, have a solid grasp of social media and the ability to pitch and deliver engaging, high‐quality content.The role will be based in the Mackay, QLD area.ResponsibilitiesSource and create compelling stories that resonate with an audienceDeliver relevant content that both engages our existing subscribers and attracts new readersWork under deadline pressure in a fast‐paced workplace to cover breaking stories without compromising on quality or accuracyFocus on online engagement and drive subscription growthDemonstrate initiative to seek out stories that are not already breaking and identify unique angles that drive conversation and move the issue forwardDigest digital data and use it in planning contentTurn what can sometimes be dry topics into engaging readsQualificationsA senior journalist with a minimum 2‐3 years experience in a newsroomThrives on the challenge of meeting business outcomes and reader expectations and actively looks to exceed themAbility to cut through political speak and break down complex mining issuesStrong news judgment and interview skillsUnderstands and has experience in digital storytelling as well as printWilling to embrace change and demonstrate agility in a fast‐paced sectorSelf‐starter who can maintain high levels of personal organisation and time managementUnderstands social media, SEO, digital dataHarding working,
