Yard Supervisor – Newton
Newtons Building & Landscape Supplies is looking for an experienced yard operator who is ready to step up and take responsibility for the day-to-day running of our busy Newton yard.
This is a hands-on leadership position.
You will work alongside the team while coordinating yard activities, maintaining high standards and making sure customers, trucks, stock, people and equipment keep moving safely and efficiently.
We are looking for someone who understands how a busy building materials business operates, can lead people clearly and confidently, and takes pride in keeping their workplace organised, productive and safe.
About Newtons
Newtons is a proudly South Australian, family-owned business that has been supporting the local building, landscaping and construction industries for over 30 years.
Our Newton site is our head office and a key part of our wider business.
It services trade customers, builders, landscapers, civil contractors and the general public with a broad range of building and landscape products.
We are a practical, customer-focused business.
We value people who take ownership, work hard, communicate directly and help their team get the job done.
The role
As Yard Supervisor, you will lead the daily operations of the Newton yard and coordinate the team to ensure work is completed safely, accurately and efficiently.
You will be visible in the yard, working with the team, solving problems and setting the standard for how the site should operate.
Your responsibilities will include:
Leading and coordinating the daily activities of yard employees
Allocating tasks and making sure priorities are clearly understood
Coordinating customer pickups,
truck loading and unloading
Maintaining an efficient flow of vehicles, materials and people throughout the yard
Ensuring orders are picked and loaded accurately
Monitoring stock presentation, storage and general yard organisation
Supporting stocktakes and investigating stock discrepancies
Conducting daily pre-starts and communicating operational priorities
Ensuring forklifts, loaders and other equipment are checked and operated correctly
Identifying safety risks and addressing unsafe behaviour immediately
Maintaining high housekeeping and presentation standards
Training, supporting and holding team members accountable
Working closely with sales, logistics, purchasing and site management
Responding quickly to operational problems, customer requirements and changing priorities
Providing excellent service to trade and retail customers
About you
You will already have solid experience working in a yard, warehouse, building supplies, landscape supplies, transport, manufacturing or similar operational environment.
You do not need to be a career manager, but you must be comfortable taking the lead, giving direction and holding people to an appropriate standard.
To succeed in this position, you will have:
Experience as a yard operator, leading hand, team leader or supervisor
Strong knowledge of yard, warehouse or materials-handling operations
The confidence to allocate work and provide clear direction
A practical, hands-on approach to leadership
Strong safety awareness and a willingness to address unsafe behaviour
Good organisational and problem-solving skills
The ability to remain calm in a busy and changing environment
Strong communication skills
A current forklift licence
The physical capacity to undertake hands-on yard work
Experience operating loaders or other mobile plant will be highly regarded.
Knowledge of building materials, landscaping products, timber, civil products, masonry, sand, soil or quarry materials would also be an advantage.
What we offer
A permanent, full-time position
A hands-on role with authority and responsibility
Stable employment with an established South Australian family business
A practical and supportive management team
Staff discounts across our product range
The opportunity to develop your leadership and operational management skills
Remuneration based on your experience and the value you bring to the role
Our expectations
Safety, customer service and operational standards are not negotiable.
We expect our Yard Supervisor to set the example, communicate clearly and take responsibility for what happens in the yard.
You will need to recognise problems early, address poor performance and make sure the team understands what is expected.
This role will suit someone who enjoys being active, likes running an organised operation and gets satisfaction from seeing a team work well together.
