Focus Radiology is offering a rare opportunity for a motivated Radiographer to transition into Sonography through our structured, employer-supported training program.
This position is designed for Radiographers who are passionate about patient care, committed to professional development, and looking to build a long-term career in ultrasound within a supportive private practice environment.
About the Role
As a Trainee Sonographer, you will complete a structured clinical training program while undertaking your postgraduate Sonography qualification.
Working alongside experienced Sonographers and clinical mentors, you will progressively develop the skills and confidence required to become an accredited Sonographer.
You will gain hands-on experience across a broad range of ultrasound examinations, including:
General ultrasound
Musculoskeletal ultrasound
Obstetric & gynaecological ultrasound
Basic Vascular ultrasound
The program combines supervised clinical training, formal education and ongoing mentoring, providing a comprehensive pathway into one of the most rewarding careers in medical imaging.
What You'll Bring
To be considered for this opportunity, you must have:
Bachelor of Medical Imaging/Radiography (or equivalent)
Current AHPRA registration as a Diagnostic Radiographer
Minimum 2-3 years' post-graduate experience as a Diagnostic Radiographer
A genuine passion for pursuing a career in Sonography
Excellent communication and patient care skills
Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality imaging
A positive attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to learn




The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Previous experience in CT or exposure to ultrasound will be highly regarded but is not essential.
Training Program
This is a structured training position designed to prioritise your development as a Sonographer.
Your roster will generally consist of:
A minimum of 3 days per week in supervised Sonography training (up to 5 days)
Remaining rostered days working as a Diagnostic Radiographer to support clinic operations and maintain your radiography skills
Training will be delivered across the Focus Radiology network to ensure access to experienced Sonographers and a diverse clinical caseload.
You may be required to rotate between our clinics in Dapto, Warilla, Woonona, Engadine, Haymarket and Liverpool throughout your training.
Initial Assessment Period
During the first 1–2 months of employment, the successful applicant will be required to demonstrate their Radiography skills, clinical competence, patient care standards and ability to work effectively within the Focus Radiology team.
During this period, the trainee will also shadow experienced Sonographers to gain insight into the role, workflow and expectations of Sonography training.
This initial period will assist in determining overall suitability for progression into the structured Sonography training pathway.
Location
This opportunity isbased in the Illawarra.
Applicants must becurrent Illawarra residentsand intend to remain living in the region throughout the duration of the training program.

Commit to remaining employed with Focus Radiology fora minimum of 2-3 years following successful completion of their Sonography qualification
Travel between Focus Radiology clinics as required throughout the training program

Participate fully in postgraduate study and supervised clinical training
Be available to work during the Christmas and New Year period where rostered
