Mechanical Maintenance Fitter (Fitter & Turner)
Location:North Geelong, VIC
Hours:Monday to Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm, with overtime available.
About Softwood Plantation Exporters (SPE)
Softwood Plantation Exporters (SPE) is a woodchip receival and log processing facility located on the Port of Geelong.
SPE is jointly owned by Associated Kiln Driers (AKD), a leading sawmilling business based in Colac, and Hancocks Victorian Plantations (HVP), the largest softwood plantation grower in Victoria.
SPE receives, processes, stores, and exports up to 500,000 tonnes of woodchip annually to customers in the pulp and paper industry throughout Asia.
Operating from our facility on Langdon Street, North Geelong, the site includes a static debarking and chipping line, together with a high-volume chip truck receival facility.
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Fitter (Fitter & Turner) to oversee the routine maintenance and repair of our static plant and mobile equipment, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the site.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining plant reliability through preventative maintenance, breakdown response, equipment installation, fabrication, and continuous improvement initiatives.
You will work closely with operations to minimise downtime while maintaining the highest safety standards.
This is a full-time day shift position, working Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm, with overtime opportunities available to assist with breakdowns and operational requirements.
You'll work on a wide variety of equipment including:




Conveyors
Chippers and debarkers
Hydraulic systems
Gearboxes, bearings and motors
Mobile plant
Material handling equipment
Key Responsibilities
Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and modifications on plant and equipment.
Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and carry out fault finding and repairs.
Install, align, commission, and optimise new equipment.
Complete welding, fabrication, machining, and structural repairs as required.
Maintain spare parts inventory and coordinate the ordering of maintenance supplies.
Work closely with operations to plan maintenance activities and minimise production downtime.
Ensure plant and equipment remain compliant with safety and quality requirements.
Maintain high standards of housekeeping across the workshop and site.
Promote and follow all workplace health and safety procedures.
Provide operational support during staff leave and peak production periods.
Undertake other maintenance duties as required.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Trade qualification as a Fitter and Turner or equivalent mechanical trade qualification.
Experience working in a manufacturing, timber processing, sawmilling,



recycling, or heavy industrial setting.
Strong mechanical fault-finding and troubleshooting skills.
Welding, fabrication, and general maintenance experience.
The ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
A proactive approach to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
Essential Licences
Current Driver's Licence.
Forklift Licence.
Loader and Skid Steer operating licences (or willingness to obtain).
High Risk Work Licence (Boom Lift) is desirable but not essential.
