The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) is a federally funded program that connects compassionate volunteers with older people living in residential aged care or in their own homes.
Through regular visits, volunteers provide friendship, conversation and meaningful social connection.
**What you'll do**
As an ACVVS Volunteer Visitor, you'll spend approximately one hour with the same older person on a regular basis.
Your visits might include:
* Enjoying a chat over a cup of tea or coffee
* Sharing stories and life experiences
* Playing cards, board games or puzzles
* Going for a gentle walk or sitting in the garden
* Reading together
* Listening to music
* Celebrating birthdays or special occasions
* Simply being a friendly, familiar face, someone looks forward to seeing
There is no personal care, cleaning, transport, medical care or domestic assistance involved.
Your role is simply to provide companionship.
**Who we are looking for**
You don't need previous volunteer experience or qualifications.
We're looking for people who are:
* Friendly and compassionate
* Reliable and committed
* Good listeners
* Respectful of people from diverse backgrounds
* Aged 18 years or over
People of all ages over 18 years, abilities and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
We especially welcome volunteers who speak another language or understand different cultures, as many older Australians enjoy connecting with someone who shares their language or cultural background.
**Commitment:**
We ask volunteers to commit to regular visits over a 12-month period.
Ideally, visits occur fortnightly, however, monthly visits can also work.
The minimum expectation is 12 visits over a 12-month period, allowing genuine relationships to develop.
**Why volunteer?
The rewards are enormous**
Volunteers often tell us they gain:
* A genuine friendship
* A sense of purpose
* Improved wellbeing
* Recent perspectives and life wisdom
* The opportunity to give back to the community
* Experience that looks great on a resume for health, aged care and community service careers
For the older person, your visit may become the highlight of their week.
