This role will be based at HOTA, Home of the Arts.

HOTA offers a diverse suite of venues and facilities, including a gallery, outdoor stage, indoor theatres and cinemas, function and events rooms, as well as a range of food and beverage venues including the HOTA Café, the rooftop Exhibitionist Bar and three hat Palette Restaurant.
At the heart of HOTA's identity is a rich and diverse program: live music, theatre, dance, comedy, film, visual art exhibitions, children's shows, community workshops, and festivals - all taking place across the array of venues.
About the Role
The Senior Lighting Technician is responsible for the delivery, reliability, and continuous improvement of lighting systems across all venues and gallery spaces.
Working in close partnership with the Head of Lighting, this role provides hands-on technical leadership to ensure daily operations, equipment standards, and crew performance consistently meet organizational expectations.
This position plays a key role in maintaining high production values across touring, in-house, and exhibition-based work, while upholding strict WHS compliance and operational best practice.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Development & Continuous Improvement
Support the ongoing development of lighting services across performing arts, events, and gallery environments.




Assist in the creation, refinement, and implementation of operational procedures, documentation, and training frameworks.
Contribute to improving workflows, system integration, and overall departmental efficiency.
Operations & Equipment Management
Oversee the day-to-day operation and readiness of lighting systems and associated infrastructure.
Ensure all equipment, processes, and personnel comply with internal standards and WHS requirements.
Act as a senior operator/programmer when required across performances, events, and installations.
Support maintenance, fault-finding, and lifecycle management of lighting assets.
Gallery & Exhibition Delivery
Support the installation, focus, and maintenance of lighting systems within gallery and exhibition spaces.
Ensure all equipment is safe, compliant, and aligned with curatorial and design requirements.
Crew Leadership & Development
Coordinate and supervise casual technicians and contract crew across performances, exhibitions, and events.
Deliver inductions, training, and ongoing mentorship to maintain high technical and safety standards.
Provide specialist training to internal teams on lighting systems and exhibition-specific requirements.
Technical Execution
Deliver high-quality lighting outcomes across theatre, events, and exhibitions.
Operate and program lighting systems to meet artistic, technical, and safety expectations.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in live and time-critical environments.
Documentation & CAD
Produce and maintain accurate lighting plans and technical documentation using CAD software.




Ensure all show files, patching, and system documentation are current and accessible.
Administration & Coordination
Support crew rostering and resource allocation in collaboration with Technical Services leadership.
Assist with administrative tasks including documentation management and operational tracking.
Liaise with internal departments, visiting productions, and external stakeholders to ensure smooth delivery.
What We're Looking For
Lighting Expertise:Advanced knowledge of theatrical, event, and exhibition lighting systems, including current technologies and industry practices.
Technical Leadership:Proven ability to lead crews, manage workflows, and uphold high operational standards.
Programming & Operation:Solid experience with grandMA3 in live and pre-programmed environments.
Training & Development:Ability to effectively train, mentor, and upskill technicians and internal teams.
CAD & Documentation:Proficiency in Vectorworks for technical drafting and documentation.
Problem Solving:Strong troubleshooting skills in fast-paced, live production environments.
Physical Capability:Ability to perform manual handling tasks and work in technical environments.

Test & Tag certification (desirable)
Current Driver's License
First Aid Certificate
Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
EWPA Yellow Card
