Power Electronics / Power Systems Engineer
AC Electrical Systems
Motor Control & Starting Systems
Industrial Power Products
Embedded Control Electronics
VFD's, Switchgear, High Current
Long Term Permanent Position
We are looking for a Power Electronics engineer, ideally with practical experience working on AC electrical systems and motors, together with enough design capability to make a meaningful contribution to product development.
If you are in this space, we're keen to hear about:
Where you have worked and what you have worked on
What equipment or products you have worked on
What you have designed and significantly contributed to
The opportunity
Our state-of-the-art design and manufacturing facility in Port Kembla offers a multidisciplinary R&D;, engineering and manufacturing environment developing and supporting globally deployed industrial electronic products associated with:
AC motors and motor control
power electronics
soft starters and motor-starting systems
VFDs and motor drives
industrial switching and control
protection, sensing and fault handling
embedded control hardware
current and voltage measurement
released-product improvement and production support
The role can suit a developing or established engineer, but it requires genuine practical experience rather than academic knowledge alone.
What you will work on...
Designing and developing power-electronics circuits and product subsystems.
Contributing to AC-side, mains-side and motor-control product development.
Working with power stages, switching devices, gate drivers, sensing and protection circuits.
Supporting soft starters, VFDs, motor controllers, contactors or related industrial switching products.
Selecting and applying SCRs, TRIACs, MOSFETs, IGBTs or similar switching devices.
Developing or reviewing schematics and PCB designs.
Considering high-current paths, thermal behaviour, EMC, isolation, creepage and clearance.
Building, testing and debugging prototype hardware.
Investigating failures found during development, production testing or field use.
Implementing corrective design changes and validating the results.
Working with embedded firmware, mechanical design,

production and product lifecycle engineers.
Producing clear design records, test results and release documentation.
Essential experience
Your experience may be drawn from power electronics, motor control, industrial automation, switchgear, drives, machinery, renewable energy, industrial power conversion or electrical product manufacturing.
You must have:
Professional engineering experience involving AC systems and electric motors.
Substantive design or development capability.
The ability to explain what you personally designed, changed, calculated, selected, programmed, tested or validated.
Experience working with commercial products, electrical or electronic hardware.
An understanding of how designs progress from concept through prototype, test, correction and release.
A relevant qualification in electrical, electronic, power, mechatronics or a related engineering discipline.
Relevant technical experience
Experience in several of the following areas would be valuable:
Three-phase AC motors
induction motors or permanent-magnet motors
motor starting and current limiting
soft starters
variable-frequency drives
motor controllers
inverter power stages
AC-DC or DC-AC conversion
SCR or TRIAC control
MOSFET, IGBT or SiC switching
gate-driver circuits
current and voltage sensing
overcurrent, overvoltage and thermal protection
contactors and industrial switching
power-system or motor-protection interfaces
high-current PCB design
thermal design and component derating
EMC and switching-noise control
galvanic isolation
creepage and clearance
prototype bring-up and fault diagnosis
production and field validation
The design requirement
Applicants must have credible design capability.

This does not necessarily mean that you must have independently architected an entire commercial product. It does mean that you should have made real engineering decisions and be able to explain them.
Examples include:
selecting a circuit or system topology
designing or modifying a power stage
calculating component ratings
selecting switching devices
designing sensing or protection circuits
developing motor-control logic
preparing schematics
reviewing PCB current paths or layout
resolving thermal or EMC problems
changing a design after failed testing
validating a prototype or released-product modification
Candidates whose experience is limited to operating equipment, configuring relays, following test procedures, commissioning systems or reviewing imported designs will need to demonstrate additional personal design contribution / side projects.
Robust backgrounds may include...
We are particularly keen if you have worked for manufacturers, consultancies or engineering teams involved in:
motor drives and VFDs
soft starters
motor-control centres
industrial switchgear
pumps, compressors, fans or rotating equipment
industrial control products
power converters and inverters
UPS or renewable-energy systems
EV charging or electric-drive systems
mining, water, energy or heavy-industry equipment
electrical machinery and industrial automation
What we will ask you about
where you worked
what the company or project produced
what AC system, motor, drive or power product you worked on
the voltage, current and power level where available
what you personally designed
what you configured, integrated, tested or commissioned
which switching devices, controllers or protection systems were involved
whether the work reached prototype, factory test, field validation, production or commercial release
a technical problem you encountered and how you helped resolve it
Apply Now!
Please submit a resume that clearly identifies your relevant design exposure.
Employer questions
Your application will include the following questions:
