About the Role
Are you an organised, customer-focused animal welfare professional who is passionate about supporting foster carers, rescue groups and vulnerable animals in need?
Animal Welfare League SA (AWL) is seeking a Foster Care and Rescue Group Assistant for a temporary backfill position until 07 March **** to support the effective administration and coordination of AWL's foster care and rescue group program. Working under the direction of the Foster Care and Rescue Group Manager, this role helps place animals into appropriate foster or rescue arrangements, supports foster carers and volunteers, and contributes to positive animal welfare and rehoming outcomes.
In this hands-on support role, you will work collaboratively with animal care teams, the AWL veterinary clinic, volunteers, foster carers, rescue groups and other departments to help balance occupancy across foster homes and AWL facilities. Your work will help ensure animals receive timely, appropriate and compassionate care while they prepare for adoption.
Key Responsibilities
Administer and support a collaborative, effective and efficient foster care and rescue group program to help increase rehoming and adoption outcomes for lost, abandoned and surrendered animals.
Arrange appropriate placement of animals into foster care or rescue group arrangements in line with AWL policies, procedures and strategic direction.




Provide support to foster carers, including coordination of induction, orientation and ongoing training activities.
Maintain accurate foster care records and databases, ensuring information is current, complete and managed with strong attention to detail.
Review and report on the health and welfare status of animals in foster care, liaising with the AWL veterinary clinic and animal care teams as required.
Deliver exceptional customer service by building rapport, identifying needs, overcoming concerns and supporting positive outcomes for foster carers, volunteers and stakeholders.
Coordinate appointments, animal movements and related administrative tasks to support the timely housing, treatment and progression of animals through AWL adoption pathways.
What We're Looking For
Essential
Demonstrated customer service skills, with the ability to understand customer expectations and provide responsive, supportive and professional service.
Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills, with the ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders and share information clearly.
Solid administration skills, including accurate record keeping, attention to detail and the ability to manage information confidently.




Ability to work collaboratively within and across teams to support individual and team goals, priorities and KPIs.
Effective time management, organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to learn quickly and meet deadlines in a busy environment.
Experience coordinating small teams of employees and/or volunteers to achieve outcomes and contribute to a positive team culture.
Ability to understand and apply relevant policies, procedures and legislation relating to animal care and ownership.
Desirable
Certificate II in Animal Studies or Certificate III in Companion Animal Services, or willingness to work towards Certificate III within an agreed timeframe.
Intermediate computer literacy, including experience with database management and ShelterBuddy.
