ABOUT CAXTON
Caxton Community Legal Centre's purpose is to promote and protect human rights in Queensland through access to justice. Caxton provides free information, legal assistance, advocacy and social support in relation to a broad range of legal issues for people living in the Greater Brisbane Region and Statewide. Priority is given to people who experience disadvantage, trauma and marginalization, and who have limited capability to self-advocate. THE ROLE - An CHANCE to Make a difference
This is a full-time (35 hours/week) contract until 30 July ****. Role available for immediate start within a welcoming and supportive team.
The successful applicant will be responsible for providing legal advice and casework to clients of the Queensland Retirement Village and Park Service (QRVPAS). This service provides legal and social work assistance to residents of Retirement Villages, and 'Over 50's' communities, with the overall aim of advancing human rights and inclusion in Queensland. Many QRVPAS clients experience age-related vulnerabilities and struggle to self-advocate when experiencing difficulty in their relationship with park or village operators. The services provided by QRVPAS make a significant difference in the lives of our clients and bring a great sense of professional satisfaction.
Other duties may include supervising volunteers, PLT and other students and secondees, and working with pro-bono partners.
Caxton has the flexibility to fill this vacancy with an early career lawyer or a more experienced practitioner. An early career lawyer would have an exciting opportunity to gain experience advising and representing clients in negotiations,



Queensland Human Rights Commission conciliations and Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearings with the support and guidance of an experienced team.
A more experienced practitioner will have the opportunity to extend their skills whilst also assisting the Managing Senior Lawyer in mentoring early career practitioners, developing the collective expertise of the team, and shaping casework direction and focus. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision and direction of the Managing Senior Lawyer – Queensland Retirement Village and Park Advice Service:
Apply and strengthen existing knowledge of relevant areas of law to deliver legal advice and casework using a trauma-informed, human rights framework.
Work collaboratively with social workers to provide a holistic,



client-centred service to diverse clients within a human rights framework
Deliver community education, engage in sector development and networking, contribute to law and policy reform
Additional responsibilities - Senior Lawyer:
Work with minimal supervision and apply and strengthen in-depth existing knowledge of relevant areas of law to deliver legal advice and casework
Provide direct supervision for level 4 and level 5 lawyers, paralegals, PLT and other students and volunteers, as well as lawyers in other programs assisting clients with co-existing QRVPAS matters
Trouble-shoot issues related to clients accessing the service or making complaints
Work with the Managing Senior Lawyer – QRVPAS to ensure the QRVPAS team's work reflects best practice, including meeting all professional indemnity insurance requirements.
Essential requirements
Demonstrated experience in contract law and/or civil litigation. Experience advising on the Retirement Villages Act **** and the Manufactured Homes (Residential Parks) Act **** would be an advantage.
Bachelor of Laws or equivalent
Eligible for admission as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland
Additional requirements - Senior Lawyer:
Bachelor of Laws or similar with 5+ years post admission experience
Admitted in an Australian jurisdiction, with at least five years' post-admission experience
