About the role
VALS is seeking a compassionate, skilled and culturally grounded Youth Access Inclusion Service Worker to join our Balit Ngulu team in Shepparton. This role forms part of the Disability Advice and Response Team service delivered in partnership with Melbourne City Mission, supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people who may have disability-related support needs while engaging with the Children's Court.
You will work directly with young people, families, courts, legal teams and community services to identify support needs, complete screening processes, coordinate warm referrals and ensure young people are connected with culturally safe, practical and responsive support.

What you'll be doing
Deliver in-person support at Children's Court sittings in Shepparton and, where required, provide remote support for young people attending other courts.
Receive and process referrals into the DART program, including gathering relevant information and maintaining accurate records.
Build rapport with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, supporting them through screening and assessment processes.
Work with courts, families, legal representatives, ACCOs, allied health providers and other services to identify support needs and coordinate appropriate referrals.
Provide information and advocacy to help young people and their support networks understand whether further disability-related investigation or support may be needed.
Contribute to case planning with partner agencies and promote the work of Balit Ngulu in a skilled and culturally safe way.
About you
You are someone who brings strong communication skills,



cultural understanding and a genuine commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. You are confident working with a broad range of stakeholders and can balance empathy, professionalism and attention to detail in a court and community services environment.
To be successful, you will bring:
A tertiary qualification and/or demonstrated experience in community services, disability, mental health, housing, justice or a related field.
Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
The ability to work respectfully and assertively with courts, police, youth justice, child protection, residential care services, ACCOs and other partner organisations.
Good computer skills and the ability to keep accurate, timely records.
It would also be valuable if you have:
Knowledge of the Victorian legal system, including Children's Court practices and procedures.
Experience in the not-for-profit sector, ideally within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation.
Experience supporting people living with disability or working in an NDIS-related environment.
An understanding of whole-family and whole-community approaches to client support.
Mandatory requirements
Current Employee Working with Children Check.
Valid Victorian driver licence.
National Criminal History Check.
Proof of work rights in Australia.
Relevant qualifications or certifications.
