Chill Out Zone Support Staff - Gold Coast Youth Service
Role Location: Gold Coast
Role type/pay range: Casual (SCHADS Level 2.1)
Due to the recent expansion of our program into Burleigh Heads, we have several positions available within our Chill Out Zone Team.
If you have experience in health and/or community services, are studying and/or looking for some flexible weekend work, and want to contribute to a meaningful frontline community service, then this role is for you!
The Chill Out Zone is a service provided by the Gold Coast Youth Service and has been operating for 27 years, providing first aid, intoxication and/or welfare support to people within the Safe Night Precincts of Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise, and the new Late Night Support Service of Burleigh Heads.
Chill Out Zone provides mobile patrols to monitor public spaces within the Safe Night Precincts to identity and assist people who may be in distress and/or at risk of harm.
In addition, our purpose-built vans provide a safe rest and recovery space where clients can receive water, support/supervision, first aid and assistance to get home safely.
The Chill Out Zone strives to build positive, caring relationships with clients, their peers and significant others that access our services, and to promote a safe, inclusive space to support in reducing the effects of alcohol and other substances.
COZ works within a harm minimization framework and aims to provide early intervention to reduce alcohol-fueled violence and promote community safety.
The Chill Out Zone operates every Friday and Saturday night and Public Holidays, operating at Burleigh Heads (10:30pm - 2:30am), Broadbeach (9:30pm - 1:30am)



and Surfers Paradise (10pm-4am).
The Role:
We are looking for Chill Out Zone support staff to join our team.
Working in a collaborative manner with the COZ team and SNP stakeholders you will provide responsive care to vulnerable community members that may require support.
The Chill Out Zone works within a dynamic and unique workplace environment that will allow you to utilise and build upon a wide range of knowledge and skills, and to work within a multidisciplinary team that includes staff with backgrounds in both community and health services.
Selection Criteria:
Ability to provide a safe and supportive environment for Chill Out Zone clients to address their immediate care needs, potentially during periods of distress, and in an empathetic, respectful and non-judgmental manner
Ability to communicate effectively with well-developed interpersonal, self-reflection and critical thinking skills, and ability to remain calm and take direction during a crisis or emergency
Knowledge of, and ability to deliver first aid, intoxication support, mental health/welfare intervention, education and referrals to appropriate services
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the COZ team and external stakeholders such as QPS, QAS,



local venues and security staff, and take direction from Shift Supervisors and/or the Team Leader
Ability to maintain client confidentiality, skilled boundaries and accurate record keeping
Ability to uphold the GCYS vision and values and work in alignment with the principles of the service including social justice and a commitment to strength-based practice.
Mandatory:
A positive Working with Children Check - Blue Card or willingness to obtain immediately
First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain immediately
Availability for both Friday + Saturday nights + Public Holidays with the capacity to work from time to time outside of these hours for team meetings, training and special events such as Safer Schoolies.
Qualifications/experience in health (nursing, paramedicine etc), community services (social work/AOD/youth work etc) or working towards (eg. students)
Please note this role requires some manual handling capabilities and involves exposure to environmental factors such as weather events (rain, humidity), smoke/strobe lights, and exposure to aggression.
In addition, as part of mobile patrols, the role requires the capacity to walk approximately 3kms.
