Help us develop advanced Defence tracking systems
Simbiant is expanding its Adelaide engineering team for upcoming Defence programs involving missile seekers, computer vision, target tracking, autonomous sensor control and multi-sensor fusion.
We are seeking experienced Software Engineers with current or readily reinstatable Australian Government security clearances.
The work will involve developing and integrating software that detects, classifies and tracks objects in complex environments using multiple sensors.
You may be working with camera or EO/IR imagery, AI-generated detections, platform data, RF and environmental inputs, simulation environments and real-time tracking systems.
Simbiant is seeking experienced Software Engineers, Senior Software Engineers and Technical Leads for upcoming Defence programs involving missile seekers, computer vision, target tracking, autonomous sensor control and multi-sensor fusion.
Roles will be tailored to the successful applicant's experience, specialist capability and level of technical responsibility.
About Simbiant
Simbiant is an Adelaide-based technology company developing complex Defence, autonomous-system and sensing technologies.
Our team brings together expertise in software, electronics, mathematics, physics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, RF, simulation, aeronautics and military systems.
We have deep roots in mainstream Defence, but we work more like a technology start-up than a large prime contractor.
Our engineers are expected to understand the wider system, take ownership of technical problems and work across the boundary between algorithms, software, sensors and real-world hardware.
The work is diverse.
One day you may be refining a multi-object tracking algorithm; the next you may be integrating an AI detector, testing a camera-control loop, analysing seeker imagery or demonstrating a capability in a secure Defence environment.
What you will do
Depending on your experience, you may:
develop target-tracking,

state-estimation and sensor-fusion algorithms;
implement software in Python, MATLAB, C++ or C#;
integrate AI detection and classification with persistent tracking;
track multiple objects across different sensors and fields of view;
maintain track continuity through clutter, missed detections and occlusion;
develop measurement models, coordinate transformations and data-association logic;
optimise sensor pointing and data collection for priority targets;
translate research algorithms into maintainable operational software;
develop automated tests, simulations and performance-evaluation tools;
work with synthetic, recorded and live sensor data;
contribute to technical documentation, configuration management and demonstrations;
work directly with Defence scientists, engineers and operational stakeholders.
Skills we are interested in
You do not need experience in every area.
Relevant experience may include:
Python, C, C++, MATLAB development;
computer vision and image processing;
OpenCV, YOLO or similar AI detection frameworks;
Kalman filters, Bayesian estimation or particle filters;
multi-object tracking and data association;
gating, assignment algorithms, JPDA or MHT;
camera calibration, image stitching or panoramic imaging;
sensor fusion and asynchronous data processing;
autonomous systems, robotics, UAVs or guided systems;
EO/IR, radar, passive sensing or missile-seeker systems;
simulation, digital twins or hardware-in-the-loop testing;
Git, automated testing, CI/CD and secure software development.
You

You are comfortable working on difficult technical problems where the answer is not already known.
You can take a mathematical, scientific or research concept and turn it into clear, testable and maintainable software.
You are interested in more than code alone.
You want to understand the sensor producing the data, the uncertainty in the measurement, the behaviour of the target and the operational purpose of the system.
You can work independently, communicate clearly and contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Essential requirements
Applicants must have:
Australian citizenship and a current or readily reinstatable Australian Government security clearance are essential.
Higher-level clearances will be highly regarded
a relevant degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering or a related field;
demonstrated software-development capability;
strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
good written and verbal communication skills.
We are particularly interested in applicants holding NV2 or Positive Vetting clearances.
Location
The work will be undertaken at the secure Defence facilities at Edinburgh, north of Adelaide, with some work done at the R&D; site in Glenelg.
Due to the classified nature of the work, a substantial proportion of the role will be performed onsite.
Applicants from interstate should outline why they want to relocate to Adelaide.
How to apply
Please submit your CV and a cover letter explaining:
why this work interests you;
what you have built, solved or developed;
your relevant experience in tracking, computer vision, AI, sensor fusion or autonomous systems;
your current security clearance;
your availability and current location.
Please do not include classified, sensitive or export-controlled information in your application.
Australian citizenship and an appropriate Defence security clearance are essential.
