About the Branch
The Mint Systems and Quality Branch supports the Mint's mission and purpose by optimising the interactions between systems, people and equipment in pursuit of health, safety, workplace and quality (HSEQ) outcomes alongside organisational performance.
We do this by developing and maintaining contemporary practices and support the organisation to apply them in their work activities.
We develop and maintain the Integrated Management System – a unified framework with the intent to streamline processes, focus on improving performance and achieving compliance.
We apply our technical expertise to develop and maintain management practices,



support the workforce in their use and analyse their performance for improvement.
Our technical domains are risk health and safety, product quality and environment.
About the Role
The Senior Environment and Sustainability Officer is responsible for providing guidance and expertise on environmental management, compliance and sustainability practices at the Mint within the dedicated Environment Team.
The scope of responsibilities of the Environment Team includes waste management, hazardous chemicals, air quality, water quality and control, energy efficiency and emissions reduction which provides opportunities for the successful candidate to broaden their experience in comprehensive environmental management.
The Senior Environment and Sustainability Officer promotes environmentally responsible sustainable work practices across the Mint.
This includes supporting the implementation of the Mint's environmental management procedures, coordination of the Mint's environmental monitoring program, and providing subject matter expertise towards projects within the Mint's business plan.
The Senior Environment and Sustainability Officer also project manages the emissions reduction plan (ERP) and works in collaboration with the Facilities Manager and the Environment Manager to develop and achieve the ambitions of the ERP.
The key duties of the position include:
1. Managing the implementation of the ERP in support of the Australian Government Net Zero in Government Operations (NZGO) Strategy.
2. Liaising with the Department of Finance (DoF) Climate Action in Government Operations (CAIGO) team to ensure the Mint's operations are aligned to the requirements of the Net Zero in Government Operations Strategy.
3. Ensure all environment and sustainability related reporting (e.g. GHG emissions reporting)



is completed by applicable deadlines and provided internally for reporting purposes (e.g. annual report, CAiGO and the Environmental Protection Authority).
4. Performing data analysis and preparing reports, inclusive of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission calculations, to assess the Mint's environmental risk profile and performance against legislative requirements.
5. Contributing to the continual review and improvement of the Mint's Integrated Management System (IMS) to ensure compliance with the ISO***** standard.
Liaising and developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders including regulators and auditors.
6. Undertaking investigations and audits of the Mint's environmental management system, including work area inspections, incident reporting, and supporting external audits.
7. Overseeing environmental monitoring programs, including managing specialist contractors, reviewing lab results and contractor reports.
This may include procurement and contract management in accordance with Commonwealth Procurements Rules.
8. Maintaining knowledge of relevant Australian Government and Australian Capital Territory environmental frameworks, targets and obligations and assisting in the implementation of these e.g. APS Net Zero, Climate Risk and Opportunity Management Program, National Environment Protection Measures reporting and the National Waste Policy.
Eligibility
Security clearance
This position requires a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance.
The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
Qualifications
Tertiary qualification in environmental engineering, science, sustainability or related disciplines or equivalent experience is required.
