Directions Health Services

Canberra

At Directions Health Services, we know that a warm welcome can make all the difference. For many people, the first conversation they have with us is the beginning of their journey towards better health and wellbeing—and we're looking for someone who can make that first impression count.

For nearly 50 years, we've been an innovative, not-for-profit provider of integrated alcohol and other drug (AOD), mental health and primary health services across the ACT and NSW. Our multidisciplinary teams work together to deliver compassionate, person-centred care that empowers individuals, families and communities to improve their health and wellbeing.

We're now seeking a friendly, organised and compassionate AOD Medical Receptionist to join our Reception team and play an important role in supporting both our clients and our clinical teams.

About the Role

As an AOD Medical Receptionist, you'll be the welcoming face and reassuring voice of Directions Health Services, providing high-quality medical reception and administrative support across our Althea Wellness Centre and Treatment & Support Services (TSS) programs.

This is a quick-paced and varied role where no two days are the same. You'll balance front-of-house reception, client intake, appointment coordination and medical administration while supporting our multidisciplinary team to deliver seamless, person-centred care.

Working closely with our Practice Manager and clinical teams, you'll help ensure clients feel welcomed, supported and connected from their very first interaction.

You will:

- Welcome clients, families and visitors in a warm, professional and respectful manner

- Triage new clients and support intake processes across Directions programs

- Register current clients and maintain accurate records within electronic client management systems

- Schedule appointments, coordinate referrals and undertake client follow-up

- Provide medical reception and administrative support to our Althea Wellness Centre and Treatment & Support Services teams

- Process Medicare bulk billing for GPs, Nurse Practitioners and Psychiatry services in accordance with Medicare requirements

- Maintain accurate medical records while ensuring confidentiality and privacy at all times

- Provide information about Directions services and relevant community supports

- Assist the Practice Manager with administrative tasks and contribute to the smooth day-to-day operation of reception

- Support quality improvement initiatives and maintain a collaborative, positive workplace culture

What We're Looking For

You're someone who enjoys helping people, thrives in a busy environment and brings a calm, organised approach to every interaction. You understand the importance of empathy, professionalism and attention to detail, particularly when supporting people accessing healthcare services.

You'll bring:

- Experience in medical reception or administration, preferably within a health or community services setting

- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills

- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities

- Experience using electronic patient or client management systems

- Excellent computer skills and confidence using Microsoft Office applications

- Understanding of confidentiality, privacy and professional boundaries

- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

- A compassionate, respectful and non-judgemental approach to working with people from diverse backgrounds

Highly desirable:

- Experience using Best Practice, Genie, Medical Director or similar medical software

- Qualification and/or experience in Alcohol and Other Drug services

- Qualification in Business Administration or a related field

What We Offer

- A supportive, inclusive and values-driven workplace

- The opportunity to work alongside experienced multidisciplinary health professionals

- Ongoing professional development and training opportunities

- Generous salary packaging benefits

- 17½% leave loading

- The chance to make a meaningful difference from the very first point of contact for people seeking support
