This position contributes to the objectives of the Development Services department by delivering building assessment, inspection and advisory services across the Council area. The role plays an important part in supporting safe, compliant and sustainable development outcomes through the application of relevant legislation, codes, standards and Council policies.

This role is responsible for providing technical building advice to customers, industry professionals and Council staff, undertaking building consent assessments and carrying out mandatory building compliance inspections in accordance with legislative requirements and State Government inspection policies. The position contributes to Council's regulatory responsibilities under the Building Code of Australia, National Construction Code, Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016 (SA), associated Regulations, Australian Standards and Council procedures. The role requires sound technical knowledge, the ability to exercise initiative and professional judgement, and a commitment to delivering high-quality customer service within a dynamic local government environment.

Reporting to the Team Leader Building Services, the successful applicant will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders while contributing to the effective delivery of Council's development assessment and compliance functions. The Building Officer position is a full time, permanent position, responsible for undertaking the following duties:

- Complete assessment of building consent applications in accordance with the requirements of the Building Code of Australia and National Construction Code and within prescribed timeframes

- Issue Development Approval for privately certified development applications within required timeframes

- Respond to customer queries in accordance with Council’s Customer Service standard

- Provide updates to customers on the progress of their applications on a regular basis

- Development decisions within accreditation level

- Accurate entering of information within the PlanSA Portal and/or Council system/s in accordance with Council procedure

- Complete inspections in accordance with the required timeframes and action any follow up work in accordance with State Government’s Practice Direction 8 – (Swimming Pool Inspections) and Practice Direction 9 – (Council Inspections)

- Provide accurate information on building requirements for different building classifications and bushfire attack levels

- Undertake effective liaison with other Council departments to provide comprehensive and accurate information

About You
To be successful in this role you will have:

- Formal Building Surveying tertiary qualifications and current Accredited Skilled Building Accreditation 3 or 4 in accordance with the Planning, Development & Infrastructure (Accredited Professionals) Regulations 2019 (or be eligible to obtain).

- Ability to use common business software at an intermediate level.

- Experience in building assessment and building inspections.

- Ability to understand and evaluate building plans, technical specifications, and development legislation.

- Ability to physically undertake building compliance inspections of approved developments.





- Ability to think logically and conceptually.

- Demonstrate strong time management and organisational skills by planning and prioritising projects and tasks to consistently meet deadlines, both independently and as part of a team.

- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

- Proven interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and negotiation skills.

- Demonstrated achievement in and enthusiasm for the provision of high-quality customer service

- A valid National Police Certificate, Driver history Check and Medical Clearance which is satisfactory to the Council’s requirements will be required before the successful applicant can commence in this position.
