The Opportunity

This role is focused on delivering culturally secure and high-quality maternity and women’s health services to Yolngu women across remote communities in East Arnhem Land. Working as a Remote Area Nurse/Midwife, the position involves providing antenatal, postnatal, newborn, and women’s health care in partnership with Aboriginal health workers, while travelling regularly to outreach communities. The role also includes clinical leadership, staff education, health promotion, community engagement, and supporting the development of models of care to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and families.

This role will be a full-time fixed-term position (6 months), from September 2026 to February 2027, within Primary Health Care. The position will be based in Nhulunbuy or Darwin, supporting all Miwatj clinics.

What you’ll do

- Deliver remote maternity and women’s health services, including antenatal, postnatal, and newborn care
- Partner with Aboriginal health workers to provide culturally appropriate care
- Conduct regular outreach visits to remote Zone 2 communities
- Provide clinical leadership, mentoring, and education to healthcare staff
- Support clinical governance, quality improvement,



and policy development
- Collaborate with community partners and external stakeholders on health promotion initiatives
- Contribute to the development of “Birthing on Country” models of care
- Assist with service planning, redesign, and leave coverage across the maternity program

What you’ll bring

- Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife with no restrictions
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a dual Registered Nurse/Midwife, ideally within remote or Aboriginal health settings
- Strong clinical knowledge and decision-making skills across maternity, women’s health, and primary health care
- Demonstrated commitment to Aboriginal Community Control, self-determination, and culturally safe care
- Understanding of the health and social challenges faced by Yolngu people living in remote communities
- Experience delivering primary health care programs and outreach services in remote settings
- Proven ability to lead clinical governance, continuous quality improvement, and complex stakeholder projects
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to work sensitively with diverse communities
- Flexibility and resilience to travel regularly to remote communities by four-wheel drive or light aircraft
