Responsibilities

- Located 54 km south of Cairns, this scenic coastal Aboriginal community has approximately 2,505 residents.
- This hospital offers services including emergency care, medical imaging and mental health.
- An indigenous community located 51 km from Cairns with a population of 2,550 and a median age of 22 yrs old. Yarrabah Hospital provides 24 hours emergency and accident care only, and is co-located with Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services Aboriginal Corporation which provides primary health care services. On‑call is shared amongst the 3.2 FTE of SMOs. During rostered hours the allocated SMO is to attend all presentations to the department. Once the SMO is on‑call it is at the SMO’s clinical judgement to either manage patients over the phone (low acuity) or return to the department (recall) to attend the after‑hours emergency presentations for higher acuity.
