The Position

The Deputy General Counsel support the General Counsel in leading the legal function and providing high quality, practical legal advice to CEA. The role is responsible for assisting the General Counsel to manage legal risk, support sound governance and decision making and ensure that legal services are delivered independently and in a way that supports CEA’s strategic, operational and commercial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide timely, practical and commercially informed legal advice on complex legal advice across a broad range of matters affecting the company.

• Support the General Counsel in identifying, assessing and managing legal risk across the business.

• Work with the General Counsel in providing advice in relation to contractual, regulatory, employment, procurement, governance and operational legal matters.

• Review, draft and negotiate contracts, agreements, correspondence and legal documentation.

• Contribute strongly to the overall leadership of the department, including on cross-group leadership, management and policy matters.

Our Ideal Candidate

• AGSVA clearance level: NV1

• Minimum Bachelor Degree of Laws and admission or eligibility to be admitted as a lawyer in Australia.

• 8+ years’ legal experience in the legal industry.

• Experience with export controls, national security, intellectual property, technology, major projects or complex commercial contracting.

• Experience working in a Government Business enterprise, Commonwealth entity, defence industry or regulated environment is highly regarded but not essential.

• Extensive leadership and management experience, demonstrated at a senior level.

• Highly developed communication, relationship management and negotiation skills.

• Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills and a proven ability to provide sophisticated, authoritative, concise, solutions based legal advice on legal and policy matters arising across the full span of CEA.

• High attention to detail and commitment to quality.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to implement organisational change and demonstrate a high level of personal drive and resilience.

• Eligible to obtain and maintain an AGSVA clearance Negative Vetting 1
