About the Role

The Intensive Support Worker provides intensive, one-on-one support to young people in custody who present with complex needs, challenging behaviours and vulnerabilities. Working within the Intensive Support Transition Service, you will help young people develop coping strategies, increase engagement in positive activities and build the skills required to successfully transition back into the general custodial population.

This role requires a strengths-based, trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach, working collaboratively with custodial staff, psychological services and case planning teams to support young people experiencing issues such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, aggression, complex needs and emotional distress.

Key responsibilities include:

- Provide intensive individual support to young people in custody with complex behavioural, emotional and social needs.

- Develop and implement engagement strategies that support positive behaviour change and successful reintegration into the general population.

- Assist young people to set realistic goals and participate in education, recreational and program activities.

- Develop daily activity schedules that promote increased engagement and out-of-cell participation.

- Support young people to identify triggers,



develop coping strategies and improve emotional regulation skills.

- Build positive, therapeutic relationships through mentoring, role modelling and consistent support.

- Work collaboratively with Psychological Services, Youth Custodial Operations and Case Planning teams.

- Assist young people to safely navigate challenging situations within the custodial environment.

- Maintain accurate case notes, daily logs, reports and client records.

- Support service delivery, compliance and reporting requirements in line with contractual obligations.

- Contribute to a positive team culture and uphold HOPE's values and professional standards.

You'll Need

- Qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Youth Work, Mental Health, Community Services,



Alcohol and Other Drugs, or a related discipline.

- Demonstrated experience working with at-risk young people and complex presentations.

- Experience applying strengths-based, trauma-informed and client-centred approaches.

- Experience supporting young people displaying challenging behaviours, including de-escalation, conflict resolution and behavioural management strategies.

- Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to engage effectively with young people.

- Understanding of Aboriginal culture and culturally responsive practice.

- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders.

- Strong problem-solving, decision-making and organisational skills.

- Commitment to professional boundaries, ethical practice and HOPE's vision, mission and values.

Pre-employment requirements

- Current Driver's Licence (C or A Class)

- National Police Clearance (within 3 months)

- Department of Justice Clearance (can take up to 6 weeks)

- Working with Children Check

- Current First Aid Certificate
