About the Chance
The Aboriginal Youth Worker is part of the headspace Murray Bridge psychosocial program and supports First Nations young people and their families. The role provides individual, family and group support that strengthens cultural connection, empowerment, and social and emotional wellbeing.
The Aboriginal Youth Worker provides support to reduce barriers that affect young people’s ability to achieve their goals, participate in daily life and engage in community activities through practical assistance, system navigation and advocacy. The role also supports the delivery of culturally appropriate group activities.
The worker will assist young people to engage with headspace services, groups, and activities.
This is an identified Aboriginal male position. Due to the nature of the role, which has a particular focus on supporting young Aboriginal men, applications are invited from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who identify as male. This position is filled in accordance with the relevant provisions of Australian anti-discrimination legislation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support to First Nations young people and their families,
helping them identify goals and connect with appropriate services.
- Develop and implement individual support plans (including Stay Strong Plans) to promote social and emotional wellbeing.
- Plan, facilitate and support culturally appropriate group programs, activities and events that strengthen connection to culture and community.
- Work collaboratively within the headspace multidisciplinary team and alongside the Cultural Team to deliver integrated, high-quality support.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal health organisations, schools, community groups and other key stakeholders to improve outcomes for young people.
- Ensure accurate record keeping and compliance with organisational, contractual and legislative requirements, including Work Health & Safety obligations.
- Contribute to a positive team culture through active participation in meetings, community engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A qualification in Youth Work or relevant tertiary health qualification (or working towards), and/or relevant experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, families and communities.
- A strong understanding of the social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations young people.
- Experience engaging with and supporting young people, both individually and in group settings.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with community organisations and multidisciplinary teams.
- Well-developed organisational and administrative skills, including experience maintaining client records and using computer systems.
- A genuine passion for supporting young people and strengthening outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
