About the role
Burrow Cafe is seeking an experienced and passionate Head Chef to lead our culinary operations in Toowoomba, Queensland. This is a full-time position that offers the opportunity to take strategic ownership of our kitchen, menu development, and culinary team.
As Head Chef, you will be instrumental in delivering exceptional dining experiences whilst maintaining the highest standards of food quality, safety, and presentation. This role is central to our hospitality operations and offers the chance to showcase your culinary expertise and leadership capabilities in a dynamic and growing organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee all kitchen operations, including food preparation, cooking, plating, and presentation to ensure consistent quality and adherence to company standards
- Plan, design and develop menus that reflect seasonal ingredients, culinary trends and the vision of Burrow
- Manage kitchen inventory, ordering, stock control and food cost management to optimise profitability whilst maintaining quality
- Lead, train, mentor and supervise kitchen staff, fostering a cooperative and high-performing culinary team
- Ensure strict adherence to health and safety regulations, food hygiene standards and workplace policies
- Maintain kitchen equipment and facilities, coordinating maintenance and repairs as required
- Liaise with suppliers to source high-quality ingredients and negotiate favourable terms
- Monitor food quality and consistency, implementing improvements where necessary
- Collaborate with management and front-of-house teams to deliver exceptional customer experiences
- Prepare accurate financial reports and budgets for kitchen operations
What we're looking for
- Formal culinary qualifications or equivalent industry-recognised training in professional cookery
- Advanced knowledge of food preparation techniques, cuisines and flavour profiles
- Strong understanding of food safety,
health and hygiene legislation and HACCP principles
- Proven experience in menu planning and development aligned with business objectives
- Excellent leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and develop staff
- Proficiency in kitchen management systems and cost control procedures
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments
- Physical capability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment, including standing for extended periods and working unsociable hours
- Problem-solving abilities and attention to detail in a high-pressure environment
