About the role
We are seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join our team at Hahndorf Market for two exciting opportunities: a Butcher Shop Assistant and a Butcher Manager position. Both roles are full-time positions based on site, and offer the chance to work in a dynamic, customer-focused environment where traditional butchery skills are valued and developed with new equipment. Key responsibilities
For the Butcher Shop Assistant:
- Assisting experienced butcher/s in the preparation, portioning, packing and presentation of meat products
- Maintaining high standards of food hygiene and safety in accordance with Australian food standards and regulations
- Keeping work areas clean, organised and well-stocked with fresh meat products
- Assisting with customer service and responding to customer enquiries about products and cuts
- Learning proper knife techniques and meat preparation methods under supervision
- Operating butchery equipment safely and responsibly
- Supporting the butcher manager and senior staff with daily operational tasks
For the Butcher Manager:
- Overseeing all aspects of the butchery operation, including meat preparation, quality control and food safety compliance
- Managing and supervising the butcher assistant team, providing training, guidance and feedback
- Ordering meat products and managing inventory to ensure optimal stock levels and freshness
- Maintaining strict adherence to food safety regulations and hygiene standards
- Ensuring consistent quality in all meat products and customer service delivery
- Building strong relationships with customers and addressing any concerns or special requests
- Contributing to staff scheduling, rostering and team development
- Working alongside management to improve operational efficiency and profitability
What we're looking for
For the Butcher Shop Assistant:
- A strong willingness to learn and develop skills in the butchery trade
- Good physical stamina, as the role involves standing for extended periods and handling heavy items in a cold environment
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to food safety and hygiene standards
- Reliable, punctual and with a positive, team-oriented attitude
- Basic customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively
- Previous experience in a butchery or food retail environment is advantageous but not essential
- A genuine passion for quality meat products and serving our community
For the Butcher Manager:
- Extensive experience working as a qualified butcher with a strong understanding of all meat types and cuts
- Proven experience in a supervisory or management role within a butchery or similar food retail environment
- Advanced knife skills and mastery of traditional and modern butchery techniques
- Sound knowledge of food safety legislation, regulations and best practices in Australia
- Strong leadership abilities with the capacity to motivate and develop team members to grow
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to build lasting client relationships
- Proficiency with inventory management and ordering systems such as EMC
- Ability to maintain high standards of quality control and hygiene in a fast-paced environment
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
