The University of Melbourne seeks a lawyer with around 3 years’ post‑qualification experience to join the Legal and Risk team in the Chief Operating Officer Portfolio. The successful candidate will work closely with experienced in‑house lawyers to provide practical, solution‑focused legal advice across HASS activities, including teaching, student, research and engagement matters.

What you will deliver
- Provide clear, practical legal advice across a range of HASS matters, including education, research, philanthropy and engagement activities.
- Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements with education and research partners.
- Take increasing ownership of day‑to‑day legal matters, with guidance on more complex issues.
- Develop effective working relationships with academic and professional staff.
- Contribute to team knowledge sharing and process improvements.
You may be a great fit if
- Have around 3 years’ post‑qualification experience, ideally in private practice.
- Hold a current Victorian Practising Certificate (or equivalent qualification).
- Have experience in commercial contracting and/or exposure to IP, trusts, privacy or administrative law.
- Possess strong drafting skills and attention to detail.
- Have a practical, solutions‑focused mindset and interest in developing an in‑house skillset.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with non‑legal stakeholders.
- Positive judgement and willingness to seek guidance where appropriate.
