BHM Geotechnical Pty Ltd, trading as TerraForma Drilling, provides specialist geotechnical and environmental drilling services throughout Greater Sydney and regional NSW. We operate a purpose built, ute-mounted solid flight auger rig equipped for Standard Penetration Testing on residential, commercial, environmental and civil projects, including sites with restricted access.

Some drillers simply operate the controls. We are looking for someone who takes ownership of the entire job from inspecting and setting up the rig safely to recovering good samples, completing accurate records and ensuring the equipment is ready for the next project.

The role

You will be responsible for the protected operation, care and day-to-day readiness of the drill rig.

Your work will include:

- Operating a solid-flight auger rig for geotechnical and environmental investigations;

- Undertaking SPTs at nominated depths using calibrated equipment;

- Recovering, handling and identifying soil samples;

- Assisting with DCP testing and groundwater-monitoring bore installations;

- Mobilising, setting up and packing down the rig;

- Completing pre-start inspections, field records and site safety documentation;

- Cleaning, maintaining and inspecting the rig, tooling and support equipment;

- Identifying mechanical, hydraulic and tooling issues before they become major failures;

- Working closely with geotechnical engineers and environmental consultants; and

- Adapting safely when access, weather or ground conditions differ from what was expected.

About you

Ideally, you will have 2–4 years of geotechnical drilling experience, including auger drilling and SPT.

More important than the number of years is how you approach the work. You should be someone who:

- Takes care of equipment and notices when something is not right;





- Remains calm and practical when site conditions create problems;

- Can troubleshoot minor mechanical, hydraulic and tooling issues;

- Finds safe solutions and knows when to stop and escalate;

- Takes pride in accurate records and good quality samples;

- Is reliable, punctual and comfortable dealing with clients;

- Is physically fit and capable of regular manual handling and outdoor work; and

- Is willing to travel within regional NSW when required.

You must hold a current Australian driver licence and White Card. A Certificate III in Drilling Operations, First Aid Certificate, MR or HR licence, and experience installing monitoring bores would be advantageous.

New to geotechnical drilling?

We will also consider someone from a mechanical, plant operation, civil construction or driller’s offsider background who has the right attitude, mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.

Structured training can be provided to the right person. You must, however, be interested in learning the technical side of geotechnical drilling, not simply how to operate the machine.
