Engineering & Technology Internships – Defence Industry Internship Program (DIIP)
Are you a motivated engineering or technology undergraduate student looking to gain real world experience and explore opportunities in Australia’s defence industry?
The Defence Industry Internship Program (DIIP) is a national initiative funded by the Australian Government, connecting high-potential university students with innovative small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) across Australia's defence industry.
Through a paid 450-hour internship, you'll apply your university studies in a skilled environment, contribute to real projects, and gain exposure to the cutting-edge technologies and capabilities that support a growing defence industry sector. You’llalso receive ongoing support from The Career Network team through placement and onboarding, internship check-ins, networking events, and access to career development activities designed to help you make the most of your internship and prepare for your future career.
Benefits
As a DIIP intern, you will:
- Complete a 12-week, 450-hour paid internship with an innovative SME in Australia’s defence industry
- Gain practical work experience and exposure to real projects

- Explore career opportunities within the Australian defence industry
Internships commence from November 2026 and are ideally completed full-time during the university summer break, with part-time arrangements available where appropriate.
Interns will receive a weekly wage of $1,239.38 based on a 37.5-hour working week.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the program, students must:
- Be an Australian citizen
- Be aged 18 years or over
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate engineering or technology degree at an Australian university
- Be in your penultimate (second-last) or final year of undergraduate studies
- Be available to undertake a 450-hour internship from November 2026, on either a full-time or part-time basis
- Demonstrate strong academic performance
- Be eligible to obtain a security clearance to the required level, where applicable
- Not have previously completed a DIIP internship
