About the Role

As the Aboriginal Carer Connector and Coach, you'll walk alongside Aboriginal Carers, building trusted relationships through yarning, coaching and culturally safe support. You'll help Carers identify what matters most to them, achieve their goals, and connect with the supports that strengthen their wellbeing, families and communities. Meeting Carers in ways that suit them (face-to-face, by phone or in community), you'll use yarning, strengths-based coaching and the Carer Star™ tool to understand their needs and support them on their caring journey.

You'll facilitate culturally safe yarning groups and Carer support groups, provide one-on-one coaching, and help Carers access services such as respite, counselling, peer support and other community-based supports. Working alongside Carers SA's Aboriginal Community Team, including the Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer, you'll build trusted relationships with Aboriginal organisations, Elders and community stakeholders to strengthen connections with Aboriginal communities and raise awareness of the supports available for Aboriginal Carers.

Based primarily across metropolitan Adelaide, with some local and intrastate travel, this role plays an important part in delivering Carers SA's Reconciliation Action Plan and creating meaningful partnerships that improve outcomes for Aboriginal Carers, families and communities. You'll be supported to bring your culture, knowledge and community connections into your work every day, helping shape services that are culturally safe, respectful and responsive.

Key Responsibilities (not limited to):





- Yarn with Aboriginal Carers to understand their circumstances, strengths and support needs

- Deliver culturally safe, strengths-based coaching and develop clear, practical goal plans

- Complete Carer Star™ assessments and reviews using a person-centred, yarning-style approach

- Facilitate culturally safe yarning groups, peer sessions and Carer support groups

- Help Carers access respite, counselling, referrals, information and community supports

- Provide informal advocacy so Carers feel heard and supported to make confident decisions

- Build trusted relationships with Aboriginal organisations, Elders, families and community stakeholders

- Work with the Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer to identify opportunities for local service delivery and outreach

- Attend community events, gatherings and yarning opportunities to raise awareness of Carers SA and support more Aboriginal Carers to connect with available services

- Maintain clear, respectful and accurate case notes and records

- Contribute to Carers SA’s Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group and culturally safe practice across the organisation

- Where required, provide coaching, group support and Carer Star™ reviews to non-Aboriginal Carers in a culturally respectful and inclusive way

About You

You’re a caring and respectful communicator who understands the importance of trust, culture, family and community when supporting Aboriginal Carers. You listen deeply, build genuine relationships and can help people identify their strengths and take meaningful steps towards their goals.

You will also have:

- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity

- Experience supporting Aboriginal people, families or communities through work, volunteering or lived experience

- The ability to build trusted relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Carers, families and communities

- An understanding of culturally safe, community-led and strengths-based practice





- Robust communication skills and the ability to stay calm and supportive when people are doing it tough

- Confidence facilitating groups, yarning circles or community-based activities

- Strong organisation skills and the ability to manage competing priorities

- Confidence using computers, phones and client management systems

- A current driver’s licence and willingness to undertake local and intrastate travel

It’s great if you also have:

- Experience working within Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities

- Knowledge of local services and supports for Carers and families

- Experience in coaching, mentoring, advocacy or group facilitation

- Understanding of trauma-informed ways of working

- Mental Health First Aid or trauma-informed care training

Requirements

- A relevant qualification in Social Sciences, Community Services, Coaching, Social Work, Psychology, Health, Education, Mental Health or a related field

- Current DHS Working with Children Check

- Current National Police Check

- Mandatory child protection training, or willingness to complete it
