About the Role

Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Horizontal Directional Driller (HDD Driller) to join our Perth team.

Reporting to the HDD Supervisor, you will be responsible for delivering Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) projects across the power, water and gas sectors. Working alongside your HDD Offsider and supporting crews, you will install underground electrical conduits and cables, water mains, pressure pipelines, communication conduits and gas infrastructure for clients including Western Power, Water Corporation, ATCO Gas, local government and major infrastructure contractors.

This is a hands-on role requiring a high level of technical competency in trenchless construction. You will be responsible for all aspects of the drilling package, including mobilisation, bore planning, drill set-up, steering, drilling fluid management, product installation, equipment maintenance and project completion while ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

Working closely with the HDD Supervisor, Project Managers and field crews, you will help plan daily activities, identify underground service risks, maintain drilling equipment and ensure projects are delivered on programme, within budget and in accordance with client specifications. You will also play an important role in mentoring HDD Offsiders, helping develop the next generation of qualified Drillers.

Key Responsibilities





- Operate Horizontal Directional Drilling rigs including JT20 and JT10.

- Plan and execute HDD bores safely and efficiently.

- Operate Digitrak Falcon or equivalent locating systems.

- Interpret utility drawings, bore plans and underground service information.

- Complete pilot bores, reaming operations and product installations.

- Manage drilling fluids and bore stability.

- Carry out routine maintenance and pre-start inspections on drilling equipment.

- Lead and mentor HDD Offsiders.

- Complete daily records, bore logs, JHAs, dig permits and pre-start documentation.

- Work closely with Supervisors, Project Managers and clients to deliver projects safely and on schedule.

- Maintain a clean, organised and protected work environment.

- Manage small team.

What We're Looking For

1. 5+ years' experience operating Horizontal Directional Drilling equipment.

2. Proven experience delivering HDD projects within the utilities or civil infrastructure sectors.

3. Strong understanding of underground utility construction.

4. Experience operating Digitrak Falcon or similar locating systems.

5. Ability to interpret construction drawings and utility plans.

6. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

7. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

8. Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.

9. Experience mentoring or training HDD Offsiders is highly regarded.

Skills and Tasks

- Extensive experience operating HDD rigs and associated equipment.

- Experience with bore planning, steering and product installation.

- Strong understanding of drilling fluids and trenchless construction techniques.

- Ability to identify and manage underground service risks.





- Mechanical aptitude and ability to carry out routine equipment maintenance.

- Knowledge of utility construction standards and client requirements.

- Strong organisational and documentation skills.

- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team environment.

Must-Haves

- Current Driver's Licence (HR preferred, HC highly regarded).

- Construction White Card.

- Current First Aid Certificate with CPR.

- Relevant HDD operating experience.

- Ability to obtain a National Police Clearance.

- Ability to pass a pre-employment medical and drug & alcohol screening.

Highly Regarded

- Certificate III in Trenchless Technology.

- Western Power Cable Laying Ticket.

- Basic Network Authority.

- RIC, Substation Entry and other Western Power authorisations.

- Excavator and other plant operating tickets.

- Traffic Management qualifications.

- Experience delivering Western Power, Water Corporation and ATCO Gas projects.

Location

This position is based at our Perth Airport Depot, with projects across the Perth metropolitan area. From time to time, opportunities may also arise to support regional infrastructure projects throughout Western Australia.
