An opportunity is now available for a junior or early career family lawyer to join the team and develop their career in a collaborative, mentorship-focused environment.
About the Role
This role would suit a newly admitted solicitor, or early career lawyer with a keen in interest in family law and a desire to build strong technical, client service and advocacy skills in this area of law.
The successful candidate will work closely with senior practitioners and will be supported to develop confidence across a broad range of family law matters. Depending on experience, the role will include a mix of directed legal work, client contact, drafting, research, file management, court exposure and professional development.
Key Responsibilities
The role may include:
- assisting with a varied family law caseload, including parenting, property, divorce, child support, spousal maintenance and family violence-related matters;
- preparing correspondence, court documents, briefs, chronologies, disclosure documents and agreements;
- undertaking legal research and preparing clear written advice;
- assisting with client conferences, mediations,
negotiations and court events;
- managing simple matters or discrete tasks under supervision, depending on experience;
- appearing at simple court events, where appropriate and with support;
- helping clients understand their options so they can make informed decisions;
- working closely with senior lawyers on strategy, matter preparation and client management;
- managing time recording, billing processes and file administration in accordance with firm expectations;
- contributing to team meetings, internal projects and firm development initiatives;
- building professional relationships with referrers and the broader legal community; and
- assisting with written content for marketing, including blogs, articles or other family law updates.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
- completed a law degree;
- admission as a legal practitioner in the Australian Capital Territory, or eligibility for admission, depending on the level of the role;
- a genuine interest in family law;
- strong written and oral communication skills;
- sound legal research skills and confidence using legal research tools;
- good attention to detail and an organised approach to file management;
- empathy,
maturity and professionalism when working with clients experiencing difficult personal circumstances;
- analytical and problem-solving ability;
- willingness to learn, receive feedback and develop technical skills;
- the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team; and
- a practical understanding that family law advice involves not only legal entitlements, but also strategy, risk, client priorities and commercially sensible outcomes.
Prior family law experience will be highly regarded but is not essential for the right candidate.
