The Role

As the Ionising Radiation Hazard Manager, you will work with an innovative team that develops tools and techniques to implement best practice radiation protection for Defence personnel. You will be responsible for developing products to assist with the compliance and safety of radiation sources used by Defence in military operations, health, and research. This will include the development and implementation of radiation safety policy, technical oversight of the radiation hazards, providing technical advice in the development of licence applications and regulatory approval requests, research and incident investigation. You will be part of a small team and will enjoy the freedom of a relatively autonomous workplace, with support where required.

This is a diverse role that provides opportunities for national travel to conduct off-site work. The successful candidate will benefit from tailored, specific training and development opportunities. All relevant radiation safety training will be provided to the successful applicant.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. The primary role of the Directorate of Defence Radiation Safety and Assurance (DRSA) is to ensure Defence compliance with:

- The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act 1998 (ARPANS) and Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Regulations 2018 .
- The Conditions of the Defence Source and Facility Licences, and the Conditions of the Permit issued by the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO).

DRSA also assists Commander Joint Logistics in their role as the Single Point of Accountability (SPA) for the Defence radiation safety domain. DRSA is the single point of contact between Defence and ARPANSA.

Our ideal candidate is someone who likes having the opportunity to take responsibility and be accountable for their role.



You will have a bachelor or higher degree in a relevant Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and/or experience as a radiation safety/protection officer or health physicist. You will have a desire to travel domestically to complete onsite field work whilst also delivering verbal and written communications and reporting to stakeholders.

Eligibility

Security Clearance:

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.

Mandatory Qualifications:

- Bachelors degree in a relevant Science Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline, or Post graduate degree in radiation protection /management (i.e. Grad Cert or Grad Dip or undertaking study towards).
- Experience in the management of radiation hazards.
- Experience in the implementation of a Radiation Safety Management System in a compliance or assurance function across a regulatory or licence regime.
