Analytical Chemist (Scientist-1) – Oligonucleotide Purification & Characterisation

Position Purpose:
Syngenis is currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Analytical Chemist (Scientist-1) to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for independently performing oligonucleotide purification, analytical characterisation, method development, and optimisation of analytical workflows to support oligonucleotide manufacturing activities.
As a driven and organised member of the Syngenis team, the selected candidate will demonstrate experience in chromatographic purification techniques, analytical method development, oligonucleotide characterisation, and data analysis. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate experimental records, ensuring appropriate data management and archiving, and contributing to the successful delivery of project milestones within defined timelines.
The successful candidate is expected to maintain a high standard of scientific practice, workplace culture, professional ethics, and compliance with Syngenis’ code of conduct and organisational policies.

The Role
We are looking for Full time Analytical Chemist (Scientist-1) who can work within a dynamic and high performing environment.
Key duties will include but not limited to:
Oligonucleotide Purification & Process Development
- Perform purification of synthetic oligonucleotides, including DNA, RNA, modified oligonucleotides, and oligonucleotide conjugates, using desalting methods, reverse-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC), ion-exchange HPLC (IEX-HPLC), and other chromatographic purification techniques as required.
- Develop and optimise purification methods to improve product purity, recovery/yield, process consistency, and removal of truncated sequences and process-related impurities.
- Optimise critical purification parameters, including column selection, mobile phase composition, gradient conditions, flow rates, sample loading capacity, and fraction collection strategies.
- Scale purification processes from analytical to preparative manufacturing scales.
- Develop efficient desalting and buffer exchange workflows suitable for different oligonucleotide chemistries.
Analytical Method Development & Characterisation
- Develop and perform analytical methods for oligonucleotide characterisation using analytical RP-HPLC, ion-exchange HPLC, LC-MS analysis, UV quantification, and purity/impurity profiling.
- Evaluate oligonucleotide identity, purity, and quality following synthesis and purification.
- Analyse chromatographic and mass spectrometry data to support purification optimisation, troubleshooting, and batch assessment.
- Investigate analytical challenges and provide recommendations for process improvements.
Manufacturing Support
- Collaborate closely with synthetic chemists and manufacturing scientists to support oligonucleotide production workflows.
- Provide analytical support throughout synthesis, cleavage, deprotection, purification, and final formulation stages.
- Troubleshoot purification challenges and develop solutions to improve product quality, yield,
and process efficiency.
- Support technology transfer and scale-up activities for new oligonucleotide products.
- Prepare analytical reports, purification summaries, and technical documentation.
Laboratory Operations & Quality
- Operate and maintain analytical and preparative HPLC systems and other oligonucleotide purification and characterisation instruments.
- Ensure accurate documentation of experimental procedures, analytical results, purification records, and laboratory activities.
- Follow laboratory safety procedures and quality management systems.
- Support GMP-aligned documentation, including batch records, deviations, investigations, and continuous improvement activities where applicable.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Hands-on experience in chromatography-based purification and analytical method development.
- Practical experience with RP-HPLC purification, ion-exchange chromatography, desalting and buffer exchange techniques, chromatographic data analysis, and LC-MS analysis and interpretation.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in oligonucleotide purification and characterisation, including DNA oligonucleotides, RNA oligonucleotides, modified RNA oligonucleotides, and oligonucleotide conjugates.
- Understanding of solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis workflows.
- Experience working in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or GMP manufacturing environments.
