Applied Physics (AI Training) About The Role What if your expertise in quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge Large Language Models — exposing the gaps in their physical reasoning and helping ensure they never violate the fundamental laws of the universe. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and scientists who want to contribute to meaningful AI development without leaving their area of expertise.
Organization: Alignerr
Type: Hourly Contract
Location: Remote
Commitment: 10–40 hours/week What You'll Do Design Advanced Problems — Craft complex, open-ended physics problems at the level of PhD qualifying exams, requiring multi-step logical reasoning and rigorous mathematical derivation
Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Write precise, step-by-step "golden responses" with flawless physical constants, unit conversions, and logical flow
Audit AI Reasoning — Evaluate AI-generated simulations, derivations, and proofs for physical consistency — identifying where models "hallucinate" physics that violates first principles
Refine Model Behaviour — Provide structured feedback that improves AI reasoning around conservation laws, boundary conditions, symmetry constraints, and other foundational physical principles
Work Across Core Domains — Engage with problems spanning Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics,
Quantum Mechanics, and related fields Who You Are Hold a PhD (completed or near completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
Deep mastery across the core pillars of physics — you can move fluently between classical and quantum regimes
Exceptional at translating complex physical reasoning and mathematical derivations into clear, structured written explanations
Uncompromising attention to detail — units, notation, and logical consistency matter to you at every step
Self-motivated and reliable when working independently without supervision
No prior AI or machine learning experience required Nice to Have Experience with scientific data annotation, dataset quality evaluation, or benchmark development
Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
Background in research-level problem design or academic curriculum development
Familiarity with AI language models as an end user Why Join Us Work on cutting-edge AI projects in collaboration with leading AI research labs
Fully remote and flexible — structure your hours around your existing commitments
Freelance autonomy with the substance of genuinely high-impact, technically demanding work
Apply your deep domain expertise in a current and consequential context — shaping how AI reasons about the physical world
Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
