Position: APS5/6 Freedom of Information Officer

Location: Canberra, Sydney or Brisbane

Start date: ASAP

Duration: Approx. 4 months with potential to extend up to 12 months

Pay rate: APS5: $61.18 - $63.76 per hour + 12% super | APS6: $67.24 - $76.36 per hour + 12% super

Security requirements: Australian Citizenship required and Baseline security clearance is preferred

Overview

Our Federal Government client is seeking an experienced APS5 and APS6 Freedom of Information (FOI) Officer to join a high-performing team responsible for managing requests under the Freedom of Information Act 1982, Privacy Act 1988 and related information access arrangements.

This is an excellent prospect to work in a fast-paced environment where you will manage a diverse caseload, contribute to legislative compliance, and provide high-quality advice and support on information access matters while engaging with stakeholders across the organisation.

Responsibilities:

- Manage and process Freedom of Information requests relating to personal and non-personal information.
- Assess, analyse and evaluate information to support decision-making and prepare recommendations.
- Draft correspondence, briefing papers, reports and other documentation for senior review.
- Assist with reporting and submissions relating to information access matters.
- Coordinate information searches across business areas and monitor responses to ensure timely outcomes.
- Resolve enquiries and escalate complex matters where appropriate.
- Undertake quality assurance activities to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records in line with information management and security requirements.




- Exercise delegated authority in accordance with legislation and organisational policies.
- Provide guidance, coaching and support to junior team members.

Experience/requirements:

- Demonstrated experience managing Freedom of Information requests or related case management activities.
- Sound knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act 1982, Privacy Act 1988 or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Experience interpreting legislation, policies and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare high-quality documentation.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proven ability to build productive stakeholder relationships across a range of business areas.
- Ability to mentor and support colleagues in a collaborative team environment.
- Prior APS FOI experience will be highly regarded.
