About Us

We’re a family-owned Australian food manufacturer operating in Thomastown for over 80 years. We run high-volume production lines supplying major retailers across Australia and overseas. Our site relies on a wide mix of processing, oven, and packaging equipment to keep running. We offer a stable workplace and a solid team where you can just get on with the job and have your skills respected.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Fitter to keep our machinery running smoothly and reliably. This is a real part-time role (25–30 hours per week). Above all, we’re focused on finding the right person for our team - so when it comes to rostered days, start times, and hourly rate, we are flexible and open to negotiating the right package for the right trade experience.

This role suits a trade-qualified fitter looking for better balance, someone scaling back toward retirement, or a tradesperson who wants steady, good-paying work alongside other commitments.

Machine breakdowns happen, so we need someone flexible enough to jump on urgent repairs during work days, along with the occasional after-hours callout (paid at overtime rates). In return, you get real input into your hours, control over the preventative maintenance program, and a team that backs you up.

Who this suits:

- An experienced Fitter looking for reliable part-time hours without leaving the tools.
- Someone who wants to set up proper preventative maintenance rather than just reacting to breakdowns.

Hours & Roster: Reporting to the Operations Manager, days and start/finish times are flexible, (e.g., 4 longer days or 5 shorter shifts). If you’re looking for a slightly different setup, let us know, we're open to alternative arrangements for the right person.

Key Responsibilities

- Maintenance & Breakdown Repairs: Carry out fault-finding, mechanical repairs, and routine servicing across mixing, oven, conveyor, and packaging lines.
- Preventative Maintenance:

Run and improve our preventative maintenance schedule and manage critical spare parts stock to keep downtime low.
- Food Safety & Hygiene: Follow standard food-grade maintenance practices (food-safe lubricants, hygiene, and contamination controls).
- Production Support: Work alongside production operators to troubleshoot line issues and fix recurring mechanical problems.
- Contractors & Records: Keep basic maintenance records and supervise external service technicians when specialized work is required.
- Workshop Upkeep: Keep the maintenance area organised and protected.

Skills & Experience

- Trade Qualification: Fitter & Turner / Mechanical Fitter (or extensive practical maintenance experience in bakery or food manufacturing plants).
- Equipment Knowledge: Solid background with conveyors, drives, pneumatics, ovens, and packaging machinery.
- Diagnostic Skills: Methodical approach to mechanical fault-finding.
- Handy Extras: Basic electrical troubleshooting (PLC experience or a restricted electrical licence is a plus), welding/fabrication skills, forklift licence advantageous.
- Work Ethic: Reliable, self-directed, and straightforward with communication - if plans change or a machine needs attention, you speak up early.
- Awareness of food safety principles (HACCP) or willingness to learn
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workload
- Good communication skills and a proactive attitude

What We Offer

- Flexible Schedule: 25–30 hours per week structured around your availability.
- Valuable Pay: $50–$55/hr + Super, based on skills and experience (approx. $65,000–$85,800 p.a. pro rata, depending on hours worked)
- Job Security: An established, long-running business with steady work year-round.
- Autonomy: Trust and backing to manage plant maintenance the right way.

How to Apply

Send your resume along with a short note outlining your trade experience and your preferred working days/hours to [email protected]. We review applications as they come in. If you are looking for alternative arrangement, we are committed to finding the right candidate for our team.
