: Hydrovac Operator / Labourer
About the Role
We are a small, specialised horizontal directional drilling company based in Canberra seeking a proactive and experienced Hydrovac Operator/Labourer to join our team.
You will play a key role supporting our HDD operations by performing vacuum excavation (hydrovac), potholing, and general labouring tasks. This is a hands-on position that requires a strong safety focus, especially when working near live assets, and the ability to take initiative in a small, close-knit crew.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate hydrovac/vacuum excavation equipment to locate, expose, and protect existing underground services.
- Perform potholing and non-destructive excavation around live assets (power, gas, water, telecommunications).
- Support directional drilling crews with site preparation, backfilling, reinstatement, and general labouring duties.
- Drive and operate the hydrovac truck and other support vehicles (HR licence minimum).
- Conduct pre-start checks, equipment maintenance, and keep the vehicle and tools in good working order.
- Follow site plans, utility plans, and safe work method statements.
- Complete risk assessments, job safety analyses (JSAs), and maintain accurate daily records.
- Work closely with the drill crew, supervisors, and traffic management to keep projects moving efficiently.
- Proactively identify hazards, suggest practical improvements, and contribute to a strong safety culture on every job.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience operating hydrovac / vacuum excavation equipment.
- Current HR (Heavy Rigid) Truck Licence (minimum)
- Experience working near live assets with a clear understanding of asset protection and safe excavation practices.
- Current White Card (CPCCWHS1001 – Construction Induction).
- Asbestos Awareness training.
- Crystalline Silica Exposure awareness training.
- Strong safety mindset and a proactive, can-do attitude.
- Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Reliable team player with good communication skills.
- Australian work rights.
Highly Regarded
- Previous experience supporting horizontal directional drilling crews.
- Additional tickets (Confined Space, Working at Heights, Traffic Control, etc.).
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to carry out basic equipment maintenance.
- Experience on ACT Government, utility, or commercial projects in the Canberra region.
- Class HR or HC licence.
