Ashfield Apothecary
Ashfield
Ashfield Apothecary is a specialty coffee cafe opposite Ashfield station.
We opened in November 2019 and have been in the Good Food
Guide's Top 50 Sydney Cafes and the Urban List's best-of round-ups since. The coffee gets most of the attention, but the food matters just as much to us — short seasonal menus, almost everything made in house, including the pastrami we cure ourselves and the cakes.
We are looking for a Chef to take charge of the kitchen.
The work
Plan and cost the seasonal menus, and change them over as produce changes
Develop current dishes and pastries that hold up alongside a rotating coffee list
Prepare and cook the daily menu during service, including all in-
house items (cured meats, sauces, pickles, baked goods)
Order stock, manage suppliers, control waste and portion sizes,
and keep food cost within target
Roster, train and supervise kitchen staff
Keep the kitchen compliant with NSW Food Authority requirements — temperature logs, cleaning schedules, allergen controls
What we need from you
A Diploma or higher in hospitality or commercial cookery, or a
Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery with substantial post-
qualification experience, or at least three years' relevant experience working as a chef (overseas qualifications and experience considered)
At least two years running or leading a kitchen,
ideally in a small cafe where the chef also does the ordering and costing rather than handing it to someone else
Confidence building a menu from scratch and changing it seasonally
Solid scratch cooking and baking skills
Current Food Safety Supervisor certificate, or willingness to get one before starting
Comfortable with early starts; the right to work in Australia
Hours
38 hours a week across five days, on a rotating roster that includes weekends. Kitchen prep starts early — the cafe opens at 7am and closes at 3pm weekdays, 2pm weekends. Closed public holidays, so no late nights and no Christmas Day.
What We Offer
A competitive salary package, including superannuation,
performance-based incentives, and additional benefits.
Comprehensive professional development programs, such as workshops, mentoring, and pathways for career advancement.
A positive and inclusive workplace with access to wellness resources, team-building activities, and employee support services.
Attractive leave options, including paid parental leave and flexible scheduling to support your personal life.
